In recent years their promotions for Radio especially radio 1 have been of higher quality than much of the presentation for the tv channels.
I agree that it's no perfect day, but I feel that that comes down to the song choice. I can see the message that they're trying to put across, but it's just not strong and highly repetitive. The brilliant thing about perfect day is that it starts as quite a sober song, but the lyrics are positive and the tune lifts to reflect the mood.
Apparently it was on every BBC outlet including BBC World News. Is this the case? Was it on BBC News too? Did they delay the TOTH?
On BBC News it was shown at 2030 and it was also delayed on Radio 3 because of a live concert. Think BBC Parliament was the only place it wasn't shown.
Matt Everett on 6 Music says (if I remember correctly what he said) it was simultaneous on BBC 1, 2, 3, 4, radios 1, 1xtra, 2, 4, 5 live and 6. Also broadcast on 4 extra, local radio and world service (presumably at 8pm but not necessarily in sync) with radio 3, BBC News and BBC World News following shortly after.
Whatever the execution, it's about time we saw something like this again. They've done too much self-flagellation in recent years. Also this kind of piece is much better than the po-faced "This Is What We Do" kind of campaigns. Even Perfect Day was 17 years ago, you wouldn't have got people in 1997 saying "I think you'll find in 1980…". And I'm sure most of it was done without payments because it was for Children In Need, which answers the predictable Mail questions straight away.
Does beg the question though: how about BBC Music having some kind of flagship weekly programme showcasing the most popular releases, based on their chart positions...
