Have the BBC already bought the rights to broadcast this series?

As I last heard the BBC have got the rights to Season 3, plus the rights to advance show episodes on BBC 3 (see point below). Pure 24 has been commissioned for a second series to run on BBC 3.

However, this is all up the air because of the BBC going unencrypted on DSAT. Fox aren't too happy with this, and theoretically could charge the BBC for broadcast in all countriest that could pick up BBC channels using excessively big satellites. This is also a problem for the terrestrial premiere of the first Harry Potter film (probably BBC1's big Christmas day film) so we should know by then.

It worst came to worst, 24 may only be shown on BBC2 analogue, but I think this is highly unlikely.

Stupid rumours - Fox were happy for the BBC to show Fight Club last night, which they made - albeit the film and not TV arm.

There's been rumours about this going around for ages, and quite honestly, I don't believe everything I read.

Even on the off chance it's true, it'll be BSkyB sabre rattling to get the BBC to pay for conditional access - something they're still *ed they aren't getting.

It's been brought up again today, with Broadcast magazine saying that FOX aren't happy that viewers in Europe that can pickup the Astra 2D signal could watch it for free.

The way I think about it is

a) The majority of people in Europe won't have their dishes pointed at Astra 2D (if they can even get it), apart from some of the ex-pats which is only a minority of the population in the various countries, who know the BBC broadcasts in the clear. If they have a sattelite dish it will most likely be pointed at a sattelite with their domestic multi-channel service on.

b) It is broadcast with the original English soundtrack, so a lot of people in Europe won't be able to watch it, unless they go to the ridiculous effort of recording it, getting it translated etc.

Hmmmm it seems it's still a very real problem. The BBC could be restricted to showing the series on analogue only which would put pay to BBC 3 advance showings and Pure 24. Alternatively it could be sold to another broadcaster.

Speaking of the BBC and fighting, what happened with Fight Box (was that the name?) that they kept advertising on the BBC as being a new show where you create a gaming champion online.

DId this ever take place or was it abandoned?

Fightbox on the box begins on Oct 13th every weekday on BBC 3 (7:30- 8pm slot) before being re-run on BBC2 in November

They can still show it on Freeview and cable, but as most BBC3 viewers watch the channel on digital satellite this is a real problem. I'm sure they'll be some compromise though.

Why can't the BBC encrypt part-time, so that programmes like this and Scottish football etc, can still be on satellite without people outside the intended viewing area being able to watch? I seem to remember that the ITV News Channel has done this when showing Champions League games.
