Seems the BBC studio in Moscow isn't quite soundproof, you could hear the rain falling during a heavy shower just now.

The other 30% were watching Love Island....

No they weren't, they didn't clash. Isn't Love Island at 9pm? The match was over by then.

I did notice that ITV aired a Vera repeat and are showing Corrie tonight instead. Sensible move on their part.

That is encouraging to hear, tonight was it’s real stress test! Fingers crossed it works OK on Sunday lunchtime- the HDR should really help with a game at that time.

Having a dedicated main camera for the HDR feed has been so beneficial when displaying sunny and shaded areas simultaneously and it's a much wider shot than the SDR feed. Still a fair amount of overexposure of bright, background areas when using the shared cameras from shady areas.

Hope the UK broadcasters do the same with their HDR football (and other sports).

I am guessing this is not on Sky Q as it dosent have HDR in their software, so far failed to see any 4k from the bbc iPlayer it’s always 720p

Using the built-in app on my LG. I've got 37mb and using nothing else when watching, apart from the odd momentary buffer, it's been excellent.

Do other countries not anchor their matches from the stadia either. Odd really to fly out all your team to the host country and anchor hundreds of miles away from the action whilst a B-team is on site

It isn't really. It's different in the Olympics where it's based in one city, but in the World Cup there are a dozen host cities. So the option is either to have a central base (usually by the IBC) or have to travel around constantly. Broadcasters have done that before - Bob Wilson did it on ITV in 1998, but it was a routine that took a lot out of him and some of the programmes weren't very good technically, they were often crammed into any available space and had to shout at each other. And they still had to have a studio at the IBC for highlights as well. So you might as well have a central studio as a hub for the whole thing which offers quality control while still providing the atmosphere of being there through the view.

I'm only talking for the England games though - agree it makes no sense to travel for every match but presumably as for internationals and the Champions League a presentation position is available for the broadcasters of the team featured.

A look at World Cup pundits and presenters past including World of Sport and Gary Lineker.

Including lots of silly stuff that would be slated today, but was acceptable back then, like Eric Morecambe being involved in one programme in the 70s!

Interesting to see Gary Lineker on ITV

But then you could argue that they've spent money on the studio and aren't using it on the big matches that everyone watches, so it would be a waste. Funnily enough in 1998 ITV did more or less all their matches from the ground except for England vs Argentina because it was decided it would all be a bit too frantic and high-spirited.

It wouldn't be slated today. Eric Morecambe in 1982 vs showing a clip of Eric Morecambe in 2018. What's the difference?

With the scatter gun approach of where fixtures are being played, at least during the group phase, moving key personnel other than commentary and interview around would be ridiculous, and would probably mean a third team in the studio to cover non-England games too. They've got this right, and I wouldn't expect things to change until the Quarters at least.

With the distances involved it’s noticable this time that ITV and even the BBC are using world feed commentators for many games they are covering in highlights only, rather than using their own teams.
