Are the BBC doing any 4K highlights or clips in addition to live coverage of their matches?

No it's purely live coverage, there's no infrastructure currently within the iPlayer and Apps to offer UHD recordings at present. Remember that although the coverage we are getting is labelled iPlayer, all that it does is switch to a standalone system with the UHD offering.

Though there is ad hoc infrastructure to support UHD HLG recordings too - as Blue Planet II and Planet Earth II have demonstrated in the past. However there aren't workflows to allow the live stream to be made available on demand at the moment AIUI.

The current Live and On Demand systems are trials and not integrated into the wider live streaming and on-demand production systems, and are very much add-ons.

Sounds from what I’ve read UHD HDR isn’t quite ready for primetime online distribution.

Discount those using Virgin Media and / or Wi-fi before making any judgements. Out this evening but otherwise, aprt from a very occasional bit of buffering, it’s been great.

Ditto - Tonight has been exceptional, together with a bit of picture adjustment (Brightness - Enhanced and Colour - reduced) it's passed with flying colours.

That is encouraging to hear, tonight was it’s real stress test! Fingers crossed it works OK on Sunday lunchtime- the HDR should really help with a game at that time.

Finally got to see the World Cup titles, itvs is awful it’s so forgettable clearly they didn’t bother, absolute rubbish and not a patch on 2002, 1990 or even 1986, the BBC is visually better but the music track is not particurly memorable either, the winner easily is the official FIFA World Cup titles, fantastic music and visuals, it’s a joy to watch in judder free 4k.
bkman1990 and Custard56 gave kudos

Well they did bother, but I’m sorry they can do better then this, really disappointed with their efforts this time, maybe they should have elobarated the forget theme which I thought was well thought out as a concept, they should have based a theme tune on this idea.

In years to come this won’t go down as one of their memorable intro sequences.

Having a dedicated main camera for the HDR feed has been so beneficial when displaying sunny and shaded areas simultaneously and it's a much wider shot than the SDR feed. Still a fair amount of overexposure of bright, background areas when using the shared cameras from shady areas.

Hope the UK broadcasters do the same with their HDR football (and other sports).

Do other countries not anchor their matches from the stadia either. Odd really to fly out all your team to the host country and anchor hundreds of miles away from the action whilst a B-team is on site

It isn't really. It's different in the Olympics where it's based in one city, but in the World Cup there are a dozen host cities. So the option is either to have a central base (usually by the IBC) or have to travel around constantly. Broadcasters have done that before - Bob Wilson did it on ITV in 1998, but it was a routine that took a lot out of him and some of the programmes weren't very good technically, they were often crammed into any available space and had to shout at each other. And they still had to have a studio at the IBC for highlights as well. So you might as well have a central studio as a hub for the whole thing which offers quality control while still providing the atmosphere of being there through the view.

I am guessing this is not on Sky Q as it dosent have HDR in their software, so far failed to see any 4k from the bbc iPlayer it’s always 720p
