Was today historic in World Cup broadcasting in the UK in more than one way? Obviously the first two Ultra HD matches but also I think the first time a female pundit appeared as a main studio guest and female commentator heard commentating on a match- albeit in highlights form?

Vicki Sparks is down to do a live match between Portugal and Morocco on Wednesday night so it will be a first live outing for a woman on a men's match as far as I am aware.

RTE had a couple of firsts today, the first time they had a female presenter on a World Cup match (Jacqui Hurley) and the first time they had a female pundit on a World Cup match (Stephanie Roche). Joanne Cantwell has presented Champions League and Pro14 rugby for RTE before but first time on the World Cup.

Wednesday 1pm. Iran v Spain is the night match on Wednesday.

As for graphics - the list format used at the end was hardly intrusive. The flipper is a nice idea but gets messy when the scores aren't equal, so at 2-3 it was looping through the scorers but went back to Portugals first goal when highlighting Spain's 3rd.

They had the right idea for when Germany beat Brazil 7-1 - displaying the first four German scorers (Müller 11', Klose 23', Kroos 24' 26', Khedira 29') and then slowly scrolling up to reveal the fifth (Schürrle 69' 79'), while the sole Brazilian scorer (Oscar 90') was displayed throughout.

To be fair, if it was the old way, the screen would be half obscured, especially if it was 7 different scorers

Imagine if the two penalty shootouts on 26 June 1996 had gone on and on...

(No screenshot from the same point in the France-Czech Republic shootout, but you get the idea.)

The ITV set almost looks like an American set, ridiculously busy on the wide shots.

I read one comment, that it looks like they are broadcasting from inside The Trafford Centre

At last, ITV cutting away from an event early, being beneficial

They've adjusted, some would say fixed, the scorebar now.

In the France - Australia match at 2-1 the Australian Scorer remained on screen, whereas the two French scorers names were scrolled horizontally.

Quick promo for Radio 1 to cover the colour bars which then froze before cutting back to the studio.

Problems on the BBC there, cut from the studio, to shots of some fans, to the coloured bars, a trailer, then straight back to the studio analysis.

EDIT: Gone again!

EDIT 2: Back, after a brief cut to black.

Do you need VAR for that?

The game was a shambles. The feed was a shambles. The pundits are shambles.

May I suggest we vote to change the meaning of shambles in the dictionary to 'France v Australia, 2018 World Cup'?

Interestingly the UHD iPlayer feed continued uninterrupted throughout that Network incident.
