NBC has released the logo for their coverage of the 2016 Rio Olympics. It is ha big departure from their previous London and Sochi "shields" that they used for previous games.

They have created a promo video as well. It features the typical sites and the samba beat.

Compared to their previous efforts, that's actually quite nice.

Not sure about the wording in the voiceover of the video though - "for the first time, Brazil welcomes the world" - I know the World Cup isn't a massive thing in the US, but it is a world wide event. Then there's the Confederations Cup too.

Never hosted the Super bowl though. Nice logo though and in keeping with the Rio look, unlike their London effort.

I would imagine that statement was made as more countries participate in the Olympics than the World Cup. Thats probably what they meant. But who knows.

So hosting "The World Cup" isn't welcoming the world? Really? I suspect NBC just didn't consider football (as unlike much of the rest of the world, football isn't quite as big in the US) when producing the promo - or didn't want to let the truth get in the way of a good tag line...

or the fact that more countries participate in the Olympics than the World Cup. Just sayin....

Indeed. More than 200 countries and territories take part in the Summer Olympics, compared to just 32 finalists in the FIFA World Cup. (And those 32 do not include such major countries as China and India.) The World Cup is a major international event, but it's not a truly global one -- at least as far as participation is concerned.

203 countries entered the qualification stages of the 2014 FIFA World Cup. You don't consider that 'truly global'?

Well, we're talking about semantics now. Besides, the qualification stages -- which took place elsewhere -- have nothing to do with "Brazil welcoming in the world." In my mind, the Olympics, with their universal participation, are considerably more "global" in character than the final rounds of the World Cup. (Even though the latter even is global in terms of viewership rather than participation.)

For me it would have gone to TV 2's set.
