Surely OBS could contract IMG or Sunset + Vine directly to produce content if they thought it was needed.

OBS could, but up until now they haven't done so. Some external production companies did produce some of the Olympics coverage, but it was done so indirectly (for example, Sunset + Vine produced the Sailing on behalf of the BBC, which in turn was on behalf of OBS).

Rather than having to research production companies OBS rely on the expertise of the rights holding broadcasters, therefore its up to the broadcasters which companies are brought in, if any.

Would be interesting to know if C4 are producing any of the sports, as C4 aren't well known for any sports that are part of the Paralympics. The closest C4 come to any of the Paralympic sports is Equestrian given their horse racing coverage.

I thought S&V produced the domestic pres of the sailing for the Beeb, as well as some races that OBS did not cover ?

C4 don't produce anything, other than the odd bit of T4 Pres from HFR ?

I don't know the ins and outs of it all, but OBS didn't produce any of the Sailing themselves, they contracted it all to the BBC. I'm lead to believe the BBC then in turn handed production to S&V.

Well, I'm not sure.

The Yachting community weren't impressed with the coverage, but they're not blaming the Beeb:-

Also, this makes no mention of S&V or the Beeb:-

And S&V themselves only refer to BBC, and not OBS provided coverage:-

None of the above is 100% conclusive though !

I don't think they've done that since it was at C4. I think it's Princess Productions now.

This article is the one you're looking for regarding S&V and the sailing: http://www.televisual.com/news-detail/Sunset-+-Vine-to-produce-the-BBCs-Olympic-sailing-coverage_nid-1678.html

It doesn't directly mention OBS, but it does clearly state they are producing all sailing events and are the only external company to do so. Plus OBS's did list the BBC as producing the sailing, which ties nicely to this.

The only published list I've seen refers to 'OBS Teams' as the coverage producers, the next line down which lists the BBC doesn't mention sailing.

I'll ask when I'm at IBC next week !

If S+V did produce the OBS sailing feed then they will have had a separate team producing the BBC sailing coverage - as they weren't the same thing.

The BBC sailing coverage on the red button was unusual in having a full presentation operation, not just commentary + OBS pictures. This presentation operation (including some of the 3D graphics, Rob Walker on shore, Shirley Robertson in a boat etc) was BBC-only.

It seems Channel 4 don't want to give anything away about the set.

It'll explain why Arthur Williams took his picture down on Twitter. Although I think some of it can be seen in a dark studio on the trail for The Last Leg with Adam Hills currently being shown.

I'm guessing Claire and Ade may be in the studio then in the evenings rather than at the Aquatics Centre and Olympic Stadium - with them having to switch between the two from 7-9pm it will probably work better on screen to have the two anchors in one location rather than constantly switching between them at different venues, so they might need that big table if the packed sofa during the Delhi Commonwealth Games is anything to go by where you had two hosts and up to five pundits when both sports took place at once.

I imagine it's intentional, if you showed the average man on the street the Paralympic emblem, they probably couldn't tell you what it was and no one could ever say that about the Olympic rings.

I think this is why Channel 4 have used the London 2012 Paralympic logo rather that the generic one like the BBC did the Olympics, for the 'Paralympic Broadcaster' branding.

A few days ago I saw the front page of The Mirror which uses the rings with '12 days to go to the Paralympics', which is at least going to effort of acknowledging it it unlike The Sun *I think*.

I think on the one hand it could be considered ignorant or disrespectful, on the other you could argue it's good for the Paralympics these publications are trying to get attention from as many people as possible by putting them on a par with the Olympics.

Having said all that, I did see one local newspaper article which called it the Para Olympics . Rolling Eyes

BT did this too in one of their ads (47 seconds in):

Doesn't seem to be any guide yet to the extra channels on the C4 website, or via Digiguide, though Time Out do have a daily breakdown by sport.
