Really lovely montage with full credits at the end of the BBC coverage tonight as well . . . set to 'Superman' by Five for Fighting. Same style as that used for Wimbledon and Olympics' closings in the past few years. Worth catching on iPlayer, or when it appears on YouTube.

Is the BBC the only broadcaster that has it's own graphics generated by the host? I'm not aware of anyone else who do it, I know most of Europes broadcasters use the FIFA provided graphics and ESPN/ABC also take the FIFA.

Well I knew they wouldn't be generated by the host as such, I was just trying to put the question in the most simplistic why possible. In terms of extra cost I meant in terms of equipment, extra staff etc.

Still does anyone know if other broadcaster are doing it.

Sky Italia's graphics are in the official FIFA style, but appear to be generated by Sky Italia themselves. They're in Italian, obviously, which is the main difference, but there's also some other slight differences to the official graphics which RTÉ and ITV are using. They remove the scorebar whenever the lower-third scorebar is displayed, for example. Outside of the match their graphics are a wierd mix between their own house look and the official look.

They also have their own varient on the title sequence which uses part of the official titles, but ends differently (the FIFA World Cup South Africa 2010 logo is only half the size it is on RTÉ and beside it is a "Sky Sport - Licenced Broadcaster" logo).

CBC/Radio Canada have been using FIFA-inspired graphics for their score clock with room for a sponsor to appear. It's added in by the control room during the game only after FIFA adds in their score bar and removed when there's a replay.

However when they go back to the studio for halftime commentary and pre/postgame analysis they revert to the standard CBC Sports graphics.

ESPN/ABC are also doing the same.

Not bothered about football in the slighest, but until I forced an update just now, my Digiguide showed tonight's match on BBC1 (including full description), with Emmerdale etc on ITV1. Was this a recent change, and what would have prompted the broadcasters to switch places if it was?

I think the EPGs got screwed over these semis, It didn't help that if England made it this far their semi was to be simulcast. Freeview's EPG was confused when these matches hit it last week, got sorted around Friday last.

Commentator Jim Beglin is ill, so Clive Tyldesley is doing the ITV match commentary solo tonight. Sounds a little odd without the second voice.

Surely they could've found a stand-in in Cape Town? It is a World Cup semi-final after all.

Couldn't they have put Andy Townsend or somebody in like usual?

The match is in Cape Town, the rest of the ITV team are based at Soccer City in Johannesburg which is something like 800 miles away. But yes, there should have been a back-up plan of some sorts, and they could at least throw over to Andy Townsend to make comments every now and again from the studio.

Jim Rosenthal was in the stadium! Couldn't it have been commentary from Jim Rosenthal and Clive Tyldesley? It would have been unusual to have him in the commentary box but he would have made some insightful comments. Pity as they only used Jim once tonight for about 2 minutes before the game and then that was it.

Seems ITV are going for the "Only ones to be in Johanseburg" approach to compete with the BBC in ratings terms for the final. As the BBC studio is in Cape Town is it not? Although there obvioulsy going to be beaten, mainly due to the Ad's. I hope the ratings work out better than previous World Cup's as there coverage IMO has been just as good, if not better than the BBC - mainly due to Adrian Chiles.

Ha! I know the rest of the team were in Soccer City but I have seen the pitchside comments from Rosenthal before. Didn't realise he was there tonight so it would've been great if was given the chance to step in.

I'm not really even talking about high quality insight to be honest - Clive did an alright job leading on his own - but just having another person to chip in with a few remarks (as well as being an extra pair of eyes spotting what's going on on the pitch) would've been nice.

There were a few moments where Clive did seem to stop bothering and also made a few bad calls which I think a sidekick might've quickly corrected. Instead there were awkward pauses, he would wait for the video replay then have to correct himself on some judgements/remarks he'd made just seconds earlier.

Just all felt a bit odd, esp for such a big game.
