STV a wee bit slow on the uptake there... another appearance of the (admittedly very nice) ITV1 breakbumper.

HD feed temporarily froze on STV HD there and reverted to the SD version. Luckily they didn't miss a goal this time.

EDIT: And again. Now it's completely frozen. Unless my Sky box is acting up...

See noggin's post from 10:44, sounds very similar to what American broadcasters do for key events. Works for them ?

I'm sure it does, it's not manual though is it? and the error could still happen. It's down to the implementation and the human factor

For national key events where half the UK population are watching, Yes !

So not a World Cup match then? Laughing Certainly not a World Cup match on HD

Name me one goal lost, or action missing for more than 5 seconds in the days before automation ?

It doesn't mean that there weren't any mistakes though.

There's no way that any TV company would go back to having no automation, imagine the staffing you'd need to operate everything manually these days?

It's not the problem of 'automation' the problem is bad automation!

There has to be an argument though bearing in mind these two incidents of taking the decision to de-automate for specific critical programmes, especially now as ITV is so centralised.

It depends what you mean by 'de-automate'.... starting an ad break into a live programme is one of the only things that is done manually now!

I fully agree. The buck should stop with ITV as far as public domain statements are concerned. Just as the buck stops with BP over the Gulf of Mexico oil spill. It's bad form at any level to blame your subordinates, basic management practice !

Off topic, but that's not a good example. Arguably, the US government is passing the buck, after giving permission to BP to drill there in the first place, waiving the need for a formal environmental assessment. All in the pursuit of oil.

Anyway, I expect there will be some nervous ITV execs come Friday night, I wonder if they'll have one in the transmission suite. Very Happy

Were Technicolor behind the 'Tic-Tac's' FA Cup interruption ?

Made Amanda happy. Razz

Reminds me of the French Open the other day - they were using three letter abbreviations for the players on the on screen scoreboard, and Robin SODerling was playing Rafael NADal - so it was SOD vs NAD!

Well, think of it this way. Have you ever seen a package of highlights suddenly burst in during a match and stay on screen for several 10s of seconds ?

Have you ever seen a package of highlights stay on the screen for 15 seconds, then have another 10 seconds of 'dead air' in the middle of an act on X Factor or SCD ?

Can you think of a situation where that might happen, given the way these live shows are manned and produced ?

Yeah, I was just thinking the same thing. Holland is only a small part of The Netherlands.
