Well funilly enough ITV got it's highest ever HD rating - 1.2m ( and that's just the average for the whole show i believe, likely to be higher for just the game) and it's also reported that because of pubs etc, 4 million missed the goal! Shocked

Unfortunate then that the vast majority of the match wasn't broadcast in HD.

Brilliant.

It was an embarrassment for ITV last night and I'm not just talking about Adrian 'think i'm funny' Chiles.

Until Saturday night, that was the most famous cock up by ITV.

Causes could be - an event was in the schedule with an automated transition that should have been manual (i.e. waiting for someone to play it rather than being cued automatically), or someone was previewing something but hadn't bypassed the mixer from the transmission line. Or it could actually have been a rogue playout - though these are VERY unusual in any commercial transmission system.

Being a relatively new channel, I suspect that the ITV1 HD area of the playout area will either be very basic or just a bolt on to the main ITV1 operation. If so it's likely that it's just been very badly designed and that the manual 'take' for HD is in a bad location to be accidentally pressed*.

It'll almost certainly be closely connected to ITV1 SD as it's running an almost identical schedule therefore it could just be a copy and paste error with the SD schedule incorrectly duplicated over to HD.

*I have seen this sort of thing done before, suddenly new functionality is needed and the engineers just put in a new panel or touch screen in the first space they find!

Is there any reason why this would have affected the HD feed only?

The SD and HD will be run essentially as separate channels, it's not just a case of up converting the output of ITV1. HD items will be being played in parallel with the SD ones - so when there's an ident for example there will be 2 server ports playing separate idents - one for the HD service and one for the SD service. The differences between the 2 in terms of regional elements like adverts and news also means it cannot be just an upconverted output.

Therefor a fault can happen on one but not the other - just as there could be a fault with one region but not another or with ITV3 but not ITV4

One solution to ensure this never happens again, is to play all the commercials and trailers from the gallery/studio of the programme itself. In other words, they are played in manually in just the same way as all the other recorded elements of the show.

I doubt there are any regional ads at least as far as England and Wales are concerned. It would provide problems for STV and UTV, but again I'm sure that something could be agreed, and only unified national ads sold for the breaks.

Having an automation system upstream inserting content has been shown not to be reliable (this is not the first time this has happened remember !).

It's down to human error at transmission provider, Technicolor apparently.

Extract from from MediaGuardian article :

A statement from ITV said: "An error by ITV's transmission providers, Technicolor, meant that ITV1 HD's coverage of the England v USA match was interrupted for approximately 20 seconds. ITV1's standard definition coverage was unaffected.

ITV immediately investigated this issue and a preliminary report has indicated that the cause of the problem was human error at Technicolor, in London.

Richard Cross, Group Technology Director, ITV plc said: "We apologise unreservedly to viewers for the unacceptable interruption to high definition coverage of the match.

"We met with Technicolor first thing this morning to put in place measures to address the issue and to ensure that Technicolor takes the appropriate action with immediate effect."

Interesting. I heard it was NOT human error that caused the break - though it could be deemed human error that it stayed on for so long.

The origins of the fault must have been human error. GIGO ?

Just heard that some reckon the break in transmission was sabotage due to the fact that there is a four second delay between SD and HD. Bookmaker Paddy Power were offering bets on a break in transmission.
