And yes this does deserve it's own thread, mods.

If the Winter Olympics gets its own thread then the World Cup which has way more coverage and viewers most definetly deserves its own thread

I would actually say the coverage of a mutli-sport such as the Winter Olympics, requires it own thread more. But yes I think this a massive event and also deserves it's own thread.

Did anyone say it didn't. Much easier to reference too.

As I put in the main thread, I think ITV are short changed in this. Yes, they get the advantage of two guaranteed games, but the BBC would be more than compensated by having the third group game, the round 2 game and then the quarter final should England make it that far. I think it would then should hell freeze over and England make the semi-final for the rights to switch back to ITV, giving them three exclusive games each, with perhaps the BBC having exclusive coverage of the third place match then.

No, but we all know what happened to the Winter Oylimpic thread, albiet briefly.

Why? Both sides have come to an agreement, that's right for them, it happens that agreement will mean Englands big mantches will be with the broadcaster the nation, given the choice, would rather watch them with.

Looking at the non-England fixtures, ITV have the majority of the attractive fixtures, although the BBC have a couple of the biggest - Brazil v Ivory Coast and Portugal v Brazil.

Pres-wise, I'm guessing at least one of the channels will have opening titles with Ladysmith Black Mambazo singing over majestic shots of lions and zebras on the savannah - perhaps cheesy and predictable but with the right treatment it could turn out well.

We know that the BBC will be based in Cape Town, with a studio in a "glass box" with sweeping views of Table Mountain and Robben Island, while ITV will be at the broadcast centre in Johannesburg. Last time, in Germany, ITV presented most games from the stadium but I'm not sure whether they'll do that so much this time, with the large distances involved in South Africa.

Which is why it's of little benefit to ITV. Poor negotiation IMO from ITV - and the BBC refusing to compromise on it.

All the permutations for the knock-out stages; http://www.itv.com/documents/doc/ITV%20World%20Cup%20match%20split.doc

In all scenarios, the BBC get first pick of each knock-out round. BBC get the first two quarter finals if England don't make it, with ITV getting 2nd pick if England do feature.

ITV will get exclusive coverage of the third place match regardless, so that could compensate to some extent for simulcasting the semi-final (though far less attractive to advertisers). If England go out in the group stage though, the BBC will get both semi-finals.

Intresting (but not that surprizing) that both channels are showing the final this time around, in Englandless Euro 2008 the final was exclusive to the Beeb.

Presumably if England are in the third place playoff, ITV still get it exclusive. But I do wonder if anyone would really care about that match either way.

If ITV were to have the semi-final exclusively, that would be a massive, massive advantage because it would probably be the highest rated TV show of the last decade, so that still wouldn't be fair because even though they'd have three, one of the Beeb's would have been a mid-afternoon game that could well be a dead rubber and one of ITV's would have been one of the biggest games ever. Not that it's going to happen, obviously.

This is exactly the same deal that they had in the last World Cup, the only difference being that the Beeb had the opening game and ITV the other two. In fact this makes it a much better deal for ITV because last time one of theirs was was mid-afternoon.

Let's do a list, shall we?

1990 - ITV got the opener vs Ireland, BBC the other two, I think both channels showed all England's other games, the schedules in that tournament were mental, they ended up simulcasting virtually everything
1992 - BBC got the opener vs Denmark (Thursday night), ITV the second game vs France (Sunday afternoon), BBC the third vs Sweden (Wednesday night). Dunno who would have got first choice had England gone further
1994 - No England of course, but ITV got Ireland's opener vs Italy (Saturday night) and the second game vs Mexico (Friday teatime). BBC got the third vs Norway (Tuesday teatime) and the second round match vs Holland (Monday teatime). The Beeb had first choice in all the knockout rounds because ITV were hopeless and got everything wrong, from presenters to picks
1996 - ITV got the opener vs Switzerland (Saturday afternoon), BBC the second game vs Scotland (Saturday afternoon), ITV the third vs Holland (Tuesday night). BBC got the quarter final vs Spain (Saturday afternoon) and both simulcast the semi-final
1998- BBC got the opener vs Tunisia (Monday afternoon), ITV the second game vs Romania (Monday night), BBC the third vs Columbia (Friday night). ITV got the second round vs Argentina (Tuesday night), the Beeb would have had the quarter final, both would have shown the semi-final
2000 - ITV got the opener vs Portugal (Monday night), both simulcast the second game vs Germany (Saturday night), BBC the third vs Romania (Tuesday night). I think the Beeb had first pick in the quarter finals, ITV certainly did in the semi-finals as they showed the primetime one and the Beeb the teatime one
2002 - ITV got the opener vs Sweden (Sunday morning), BBC got the second vs Argentina (Friday afternoon) and the third vs Nigeria (Wednesday breakfast time). Both simulcast the second round vs Denmark (Saturday afternoon) and the quarter final vs Brazil (Friday breakfast time). ITV got primetime highlights of England matches - the Beeb had them every other day - but that hardly mattered at everyone watched the England games live anyway, and their complete rerun of the Argentina match at 8pm got next to nothing
2004 - ITV got the opener vs France (Sunday night) and the second vs Switzerland (Thursday teatime). BBC got the third vs Croatia (Monday night) and the quarter final vs Portugal (Thursday night). I think they would have simulcast the semi final
2006 - BBC got the opener vs Paraguay (Saturday afternoon), ITV got the second vs Trinidad (Thursday teatime) and the third vs Sweden (Tuesday night). BBC got the second round vs Ecuador (Sunday afternoon) and the quarter final vs Portugal (Saturday afternoon). Both would have shown the semi-final, but if that had been the case, ITV would have shown the other exclusively, knowing full well everyone would watch the first on the Beeb

What this deal means is that, as in most years, Gary Lineker can say "All of England's games from now on are live on the BBC" which is a great thing to get to say.
