Put The Telly On

Always an hilarious clip that. If that had been Bob Monkhouse, he would have cracked some gags while they tried to move the machine forward.

There are a few videos on YouTube. I personally like the news introductions, the way the simple vamp leads up to the headlines whilst panning across the studio. Lovely. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tU088UQ51D0

That looks good, possibly done that way to cover the join - some of the TC1 cameras were also patched through to the N6 gallery which handled the news bulletins which were presented from the TC1 studio floor.

Couldn't agree more, Jamesypoo. I loved the vamp and the wide pan across to the news being presented from the same studio as the rest of the action, which in itself was innovative.

I've seen that video before; the wide pan makes you feel like it's time to get ready for the news!

It is also exactly 10 years since the BBC Manned Pebble Mill's pres suite overnight in fear of the Y2K Bug.
Mainly because the TVC Playout was computerised but the Mill's was a replugged edit suite.

Does make you wonder what they had planned to put out on BBC1 had they had use the final back-up of Brum - presumably NC1 didn't have a lot to do with a 24 hour+ long programme from TC1 on air which could probably have been overplugged to bypass pres had it failed and TC1 not.

They would have just continued to show the live programming from 2000 Today, you''re right there wasn't much to do

Didn't the Big Breakfast do some kind of marathon broadcast on Channel 4? I vaguely remember seeing something in the small hours and thinking it was better then the pompous stuff BBC1 were putting out.

Yes, it ran 12.30-9am, and even then managed to overrun by half an hour. Actually at midnight was Graham Norton, most memorable for Raquel Welch appearing via satellite and at the end announcing "I hope you reach a higher level of taste in 2000" before the link failed, and Graham said, "Well, happy new year to her, the grumpy old bitch". But apparently it was because she couldn't see what was going on, only hear it, and it sounded more disgusting than it was, and Graham apologised to her later.

ITV did Countdown 2000 throughout the day, where the newsreaders would come on at the top of every hour - including in the ad breaks in films and dramas - to introduce the latest midnight, and then they did an hour-long show at 11pm. They were in the normal ITV News studio and I remember the lunchtime news - which was Julia Somerville's last bulletin - was presented from armchairs, which was the only time they did that.

And BBC2 simulcast with BBC1 from 11.50 to 12.05, before that they were doing their own thing. Jools Holland was on the night before, December 30th, and the Scottish opt-out was on BBC2.

Yes, at the end presenter Johnny Vaughan described it as '20 minutes of entertainment packed into 9 hours'.

Yes, he heralded in midnight with a woman 'shooting' ping pong balls across the studio... I'm sure you can work out the details of this for yourself!

The schedules for New Years Eve 1999 can be found on The TV Room. Surprised really no channel has done some kind of "Millennium season" this year looking back at ten years ago - the closest we got was Electric Dreams on BBC4, which reminded us how many people were conned by the Millennium bug!
