This aired 20 years ago today. Directed by Chris Morris. Very weird and not for the faint-hearted. Or those under 15.

Thoughts. Please. You must have some.

OK my apologies for that. I think Jam is interesting because not only is it funny (albeit in a way that won't be to everyone's tastes) but because what could've been very typical throwaway sitcom sketchshow material is mutilated beyond recognition and becomes something else entirely- i.e. sketches are filmed in a very dreamy but beautiful fashion that I wish we saw on TV more often (the attention to detail is first class, aside from some dodgy and dated 'drop-frame' filters), and in addition the jokes actually have dark consequences, which normally aren't emphasised in other more innocent sitcoms despite the fact they use the same jokes.

jam is show you want to come back to because it works so well at creating an atmosphere and a mood. The most important thing about art and media, and consequently TV, is that it has some sort of effect on you, be it joy, angst or even rage. If it has no impact and was a mediocre experience, it is pointless. This certainly has some effect on the viewer - you don't forget it in a hurry.

More than anything else - I just love the way it's presented and the stylistic feel of it. There is no other TV show quite like it; no other show on a mainstream broadcaster managed to pass the pretentious art-school style of film off as comedy, or seamlessly combined comedy and horror to the point where the line between the two genres disappeared, while at the same time not using many of the conventional elements you'd associate with these genres.
