Consult a general practitioner immediately, you appear to have been infected with Tumbletowertitis.

That theme was incredibly fab however. Are there clean MP3s of it anywhere about? I remember someone was trying to rerender the graphics with modern software and had a link but can't remember where the site was.

Wrong! The roto and full clock appeared as usual during all junctions in early 1993 apart from before the first programme of the day. Here, commercials replaced the previous interval and the 40-second clock would lead into the first programme.

One difference in early 1993 is that programme support announcements preceded all programmes, but these continued to be voiced from Ted May at Central. Videos, teachers' notes etc. now had to be obtained from the new Educational Television Company.

The ITC's Annual report and Performance Review 1994 said of the change to Channel 4 Schools: "Under a contractual arrangement, the final two terms of the academic year 1992-1993 continued to be administered by the ITV companies concerned."

It may be "sad" that schools programming on ITV was moved on that date, but consider the alternative.

If schools TV had stayed on ITV, this would be one more PSB requirement that ITV would have pushed aside. The upshot of that would be no schools programming *at all* apart from that offered by the BBC.

At least these programmes still exist.

I'm sure you're correct there Hyma. IIRC Schools was broadcast on C4 from about 1983, but retained the name "ITV Schools" until 1987.

I think you're confusing the issue with BBC schools programmes moving from BBC1 to BBC2, which happened earlier in the 80's. ITV Schools was on ITV up until 1987, it then moved to C4 but continued to be operated by ITV (and be branded as such) until the end of 1992 when C4 went it alone. However, in order to avoid confusion by changing brand partway through an academic year, the 'ITV Schools' brand lived on right up until July 1993, with C4 Schools launching in September 1993.

The last months from January-July 93 however weren't the same - the 'rotomotion' holding device was gone, commercials were introduced between programmes, and the iconic 60 second countdown was truncated into a nasty 40 second edit.

This was when it moved to C4 and became "ITV Schools on C4". I dont really remember a lot about ITV Schools when they were on ITV itself, just the trailers saying from 14th Sept 1987 they would be on C4. We had the fab countdown clock and music during the ITV Schools on C4 era. The presentation became crap IMO when they became C4 schools in 1993.

I only vaguely remember ITV schools when they were on ITV as well. In Reception class (which would have been school year Sept 1985-July1986 for me, we used to watch a programme called "Lets Go Maths" in the tv room every week but I dont remember much about it. It was later replaced by Maths is Fun when ITV Schools moved to C4.

I used to love it when it I had a day off or it was half term as I could watch the schools programmes all morning. My mum said I was facinated by that clock. I used to even get her to tape it for me when I was in school and she had to learn how to set the video (as we'd only just got one in 1987) Smile

IIRC "Environments" was the first programme on a Monday morning but that clip there seems to be a very short version of the start up which used to be for 5 minutes as after The C4 Daily ended they had 5 mins to fill before the first programme at 9.30am.

This seems to be a full "clean" version of the The Journey with no programme name. This is 6 mins long, so would be 7 minutes if you added the clock as well. Im not sure there were ever any 7 minute gaps between programmes!

I remember in 1993 S4C had a decent replacement for the old clock but C4 didnt bother and had a digital clock. What used to annoy me was that S4C used a dirty feed of C4 and we'd often get a few seconds of the end of the C4 countdown thing. I didnt notice this so much during the ITV Schools on C4 era but then S4C used to just play the C4 version clock a lot of the time as it was the same - the giveaway was when there was a 4 logo in the corner not S4C.

I have in the past seen the ITV Schools on Channel 4 countdown into Let's Go Maths - I'm not sure if that's because it was a repeat. The theme tune for the clock itself is called Just a Minute , while the holding slide uses The Journey . (They're both library.)

Awww, bless yer "semi-polyester socks" Jez, they were nice to watch.

At least I was right that C4 continued to do ITV SCHOOLS for a while.. IIRC it was part of the deal which allowed ITV companies to also take the renenue from adverts as recompense for costs in the channel to be set up.

EDIT:
In 1992 C4 became a corporation (wholly owned by the government again) and has existed as such since. Which is now why it's not unusual they should ask for a share of the Licence Fee.

You're feeling old Surprised I'm trying to remember what i was getting upto 20 years ago. I remember i left secondary school then ended up here. Much of the bits in between are a blur. It seems to have flown by.

Time does go quicker the older you are. Something to do with the proportion of your life taken up by a year..... i.e. when you're 10 a year is a tenth of your life, when you're 30 it's 1/30th of your life etc.

Personally I find it hard to believe that people I know and work with were born in the 80's!! Shocked

Thats true. The last 10 years since I left school have gone way quicker than the previous 10 years (it seems that way anyway)

Yes, you may have guessed I was being ironic... about being able to see him, not about Jez's looking young. I'm sure he's a spring chicken <"keep digging" emoticon>

Interesting thought. Also it could be that when you leave school/uni etc you get settled into a regular pattern at work, so you don't notice the passage of time so much <"here ends 'Thought of Day' " emoticon>
