The location for a potential IBC for the Olympic Games is listed as Granada TV's HQ.

I can't find any more information about this anywhere, and I'm struggling to see how it would have worked. Does anyone have anything they can add?

Hmmm..... well I don't know how it would work. Obviously shows like This Morning would be on summer break to accommodate it.

I'm not sure where the difficulty would be? Granada could have comfortably accommodated it in my opinion, between existing buildings and land on which to build temporary structures.

Exactly, and it might have been an opportunity to upgrade and expand too. I suspect the IBC requirements of 1996 were quite different to today as well.

Tracking down the bid book is the key to finding more information - I'm sure it used to be available online but can't seem to find it at the moment.

Granada had an ident backing the bid/s:

If Manchester had somehow won the 1996 bid (which was announced in 1990) I wonder if ITV might have continued broadcasting the Olympics for a couple more cycles having given up in 1988. I suspect Granada certainly would have wished to have been involved in a broadcast capacity.

Of course, in 1990 no-one knew if Granada was still going to be an ITV company in 1996

Didn't they bid for the 2000 games? The ident posted is from 1993. I vaguely remember it, dropped quite quickly after the bid didn't win.

Yes, then went on to win the 2002 Commonwealth Games. Birmingham bid for the 1992 Olympics.

Granada were very involved in the bid IIRC, the cast of Corrie were used a lot in publicity at events and the results,

Manchester bid for 1996 and 2000- and Birmingham bid for 1992 as well. Of course, we got none of them! Had to wait until London bid again.
