The whole first series has it or at least it did when Challenge showed it (though they had to replace the credits).

The first episode certainly stated "A Carlton Presentation for ITV" though - perhaps this was a formality until the policy changed in October.

Thanks for clarification. As it was a direct indie commission still strange caption to put on at the end. Almost as high hopes were riding on the show, if it bombed, everyone could blame just blame Carlton!

Of course, as LNN transmitted it, it technically was a Carlton Presentation..

There are articles online from when Judith Keppel won, and they quote a Carlton spokesman, so they must have had more of a role than just a formal credit. Perhaps they were the compliance licensee?

When did the rule you need an itv contracted to get stuff on itv get dropped?

Just returning to the Transdiffusion item for a second. I'm highly surprised that Yorkshire and Thames/LWT only had one challenger each.

Well they didn't make anything. All the programmes that had a Carlton endcap were commissions. They didn't have any production facilities.

You know what I meant- just what did they commission of any note?

I didn't actually!

There were definitely Carlton commissions, quite a few of them. The only one I can remember was "Surprise Party", and that was only one episode on New Year's Day 1993 that didn't make it to a series.

Surprise Party was Carlton's first night 'two fingers' to the legacy of Thames. It was an attempt to move forward/update the 'This Is Your Life' format.

However, whilst Thames used to promote TIYL without mentioning the recipient of the red book in advance (usually by using "join Eammon Andrews as he suprises another well know personality with the famous book") here, Carlton promoted 'Surprise Party' by announcing it was going to be Dickie Branson.

From what I remember, as the show didn't have the well known recognition of TIYL, Branson looked confused and puzzled throughout, and probably wondered if it was an elaborate set-up for a This Is Your Life sting on him.

Were Carlton able to promote their shows on Thames/LWT in the run up to them launching? Same goes for any other ITV region actually.

I believe they were able to buy slots on LWT but Thames refused. I read somewhere that Thames had to give in during the last week, as promos for the following week had to be aired.

I guess it's not suprising LWT here happy to give them promotion, after all LWT weren't going anywhere (so had no reason to be bitter, unlike Thames) and Carlton would be using their facilities to broadcast as well.

And of course, Branson had been behind Carlton's rival bidders CPV-TV. That said, David Frost ended up with his own show on Carlton, emphasising Frost's amazing ability to bounce back from any setback.

Yes, I'd imagine they'd have had a lot of slots to fill if they hadn't. Though I remember that 'Only Want to Be With You' promo of varying lengths was shown in virtually every junction towards the last couple of days.

I'm pretty sure the promos that were broadcast were for programmes on 'ITV' rather than 'Carlton' There were Carlton and GMTV launch promotions too, but they might have been in ad time rather than promo slots
