Here's a question for the Presentation Uber-anoraks...

...any of you know the font that was used for this BBC1 symbol?

I've been going through Photoshop to try to match it up, but haven't found an exact match.

Funny you post about this, Denton, as it's a nice excuse to bring a good example of mocking to everyone's attention... While it's not the exact font used in the COW software, Dave Jeffery of Transdiffusion fame has created a near-replica version in the following video recreation he uploaded the other day:

Sadly, to definitely answer your question, he states the BBC1 and regional idents were hand-drawn for each recreated clock, so no chance of him releasing this one as he's done with some other fonts he's used before...

Those, and then the OU symbols uploaded today as well - Dave has got these recreations down to a fine art.

No idea as to the font in question I'm afraid. I've looked for it before, and failed miserably!

I never know Wales also used the dot, but why was it only Scotland and wales that used that dot?

Pre-existing hardware? It was a few years before it went to a solid state system.

The dot ALWAYS looked better.

I've wondered whether the blue centre was always originally going to be the the plan (for everywhere) because it continued the style of the previous clocks.

And that someone at network perhaps recalled the era of the mechanical clock where, after time, those bits would be more prone to falling off... Because, to me, it always has looked like the middle is missing. After seeing the Scotland clock, it made sense. It's much nicer with the centre piece 'left in'.

Indeed, lovely creations in flash there.

I shall have to keep searching for an answer to the font question it seems... if any of you find out, please message me.

Urghh, no - better without the dot. Much more modern.

He said on twitter that it appears to be based on Perpetua.

Why not contact the clock's designer, Richard Russell ?

He's alive and well, and still making valued contributions in other forums
