A great effort, yes - although the credit goes to NI
Lovely stuff, well done to Network for another great effort!

Indeed it does - those clever folk in Belfast (specifically Denton) recreated this and, in what must be a first, the other Nations and London agreed to take it too.

Was there such a thing as BBC 2 regions in the 60's/70's, or was that an 80's thing?

The mechanical symbol is now resident in the Bradford Media Museum - and it does indeed have a coin slot on the top (you can't see it in the photo), although now it's encased in glass and so can't be operated. It appears to have been presented to Aubrey Singer after stepping down as controller of BBC2 and then at some point found it's way back as a museum piece!
Is that bit on the TV Ark page about the symbol now a coin operated visitors attraction in TVC true?

I don't think BBC 2 regions (in England) appeared until July 1980, when regional news was shunted over to BBC 2 for the Olympics.
National coverage of BBC 2 was too fragmented in the 60s, for any opt outs I suspect.
Don't know when national opts on 2 started ?

Well, BBC1 Wales always used to be referred to as simply "BBC Wales" which would suggest it was the only channel that regularly did opt-outs. However, I have a pile of Wales Radio Times from the early eighties and there were a few opt-outs for Wales on BBC2, specifically the Welsh language kids show Yr Awn Fawr which used to be on BBC2 Wales at 9am on Sunday mornings because the Open University was on BBC1. Also, on Christmas Day 1981 they showed two hours of Welsh language programming at 11am when the network BBC2 were showing nothing. Preusmably it was only a last resort.

I seem to remember BBC2 Wales showed cricket from Glamorgan occasionally while elsewhere saw English county games.

Lovely closedown last night over the cylinder ident - clearly in the 70s theme, was along the lines of "we've reached the end of our programmes, so this is Philip Vowells wishing you a very good night, don't forget to switch off your set at the wall. Now the BBC's Ceefax information service with some light music". Or similar!
