Can't be sure of the Youtube vids' native AR, but I can say BBC2 NI's showing of Sounds of the 70s was preceded by the ident in full 4:3, not pillarboxed as Network chose.

I really enjoyed the programme and I'm looking forward to the others.
However, there were some pretty shocking music edits and I would have preferred to see the archive in the orinal 4:3 aspect not fitted to 16:9.
I just don't understand this obsession with altering the original - it's archive after all...

Yes, I fully agree, in fact the entire programme should, and could have been produced in 4:3, it's ridiculous cropping and zooming archive material to fill a 16:9 image. What next, colouring in b/w footage ?

There was a discussion about this a while ago; apparently, BBC guidelines state it is preferred that all archive footage be cropped to 16:9 to avoid upsetting those with their tellybox's set to "Auto" (whereby the picture is automatically cropped/stretched whenever evil black space is detected so that it always fills the screen).

Which is just plain backward if you ask me. Tough titties if you've got your TV set-up awkwardly/wrong. Educate them and stop spoiling the picture for everyone else.

No one told the producers of "12 Again" on CBBC. Every single piece of archive in the entire series was pillar-boxed (with a colour pattern at the side taken from the titles). And there's a lot of archive in that show!

Ah, there was a further sub-suggestion of using said coloured-in pillarboxes instead, again to prevent the Auto function activating.

I'm not sure which is worse. I remember back when ITV2 used to show Champions League football and they could only source a 4:3 feed, they opted for an indescribably distracting set of silver starred sidebars one season. And one season only.

In fact, the aforementioned discussion was sparked by TOTP2 utilising a stunning fuchsia pillarbox scheme on one of its recent new shows. I think it has cropped its clips to 16:9 ever since.

I believe that was the Michael Jackson tribute show.

The type of 4:3 broadcasting I see the most regularly (4:3 image in a 16:9 broadcast) is when they zoom into a section of the image and then blur it. This is most used on scam type shows and Police Camera Action but it's flippin' distracting.

Sounds of the Seventies was in 4:3.

The 1973 ident was shown again last night just before the repeat at 11.20pm, a shorter spin this time with the CA saying: This is BBC2, in colour! Smile

Don't want to spoil the surprise but you're going to love all the junctions from 6.30, Saturday night on BBC2 and especially the announcement immiedately after the film (One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest) around 12:04. I'll be recording that one at home!

Cheers for the start time confirmation Smile

Sounds like it could be interesting, quite looking forward to this myself!
