Ah yes, the legendary '2' idents. What a huge jump from the rather dull 'TWO' to the range of sequences that came along in 1991.

The first 2 ident I saw was a really dull one with just a line (of water?) rippling across the 2 logo. At the time I really thought it was a poor replacement. But of course at the time I didn't know there were lots of diffrent ones - there was no coverage or promotion of the new BBC2 idents.

They were a bit of a shock after the computer generated cosyness of the 'TWO' logo - they had a totally diffrent 'feel' to everything that had gone before...or since

The BBC2 idents were pretty good. Smile However, I don't think the BBC1 golbe shadows ident wasn't that good Rolling Eyes , although I didn't mind it at the time. Smile Still, it's better than the dancers! Laughing

I much prefer the 1997-2002 balloons. Smile

I remember that the CBBC Broom Cupboard featured a re-creation of the COW globe sent in by a viewer. When the globe changed, Andi Peters informed of the change, and requested a new recreation of the shadows globe. Wink

I remember for the 1997 rebrand being very disappointed after seeing the balloon turn up to flick over to BBC Two and see the same 2's. Of course, I quickly realised it was a daft thought considering how good they were (and saw there was some new additions too).

A bit OT but I notice Andi Peters was on the Chris Moyles show this morning and here's the blurb from their online picture page:

Quote:
Andi told us all about his Children's BBC days, and he did some 80s TV show introduction requests just for you including the Northern Ireland opt-out. Yes, the Northern Ireland opt-out!

Haha! I've not heard it yet but will have a listen on the way home this afternoon, should be great!

That's exactly what happened to me, that was the first ident I saw and wasn't too impressed. Over time it became clear that these were the best idents any UK channel has ever had. Great soundtracks too, Silk is a beautiful bit of music when played out in full.

Much more interesting at the time was the new BBC 1 globe, I remember all the fuss over that, with Andi Peters and Edd the Duck popping up in front of the COW to say goodbye the evening before, and then the new globe being introduced at the start of Going Live (Sarah & Philip cutting the ribbon).

That wasn't the main thing on my mind, though - it was my 10th birthday!

You know I remember watching that - just can't believe it was 15 years ago!

... I can remember seeing that too. Was it really 15 years ago?? I'd have been 4! Then again, I was scared of the COW globe [literally. used to hide behind the couch / scream in terror / cry my eyes out with fear] when i saw it Smile

Amen to that. The soundtracks were superb, a key factor in what made the idents enjoyable for me, and the first time where you could really appreciate how much it lent to the imagery and the atmosphere. 1993's "Car" audio was great on a different level with superb use of Stereo, the sound of the car whizzing about the soundscape.

Who on earth composed the tracks though? I've wondered about it for a while.
