Happy birthday to you!
Happy birthday to you!
Happy birthday steam and diary!
Happy birthday to you!
Believe it or not, today is the tenth anniversary of the debut of the BBC2 idents "Steam" and "Diary". They launched on 16th February 1995 and were the final ones to be added to the set before the 1997 rebrand. Steam was the first to be shown.
Steam was IMO the best of the "2"s, so I thought I'd mark its 10th birthday, along with Diary's, despite the fact they're no longer shown. Did anyone else like these idents? The pictures below are from TV & Radio Bits.
I agree, Steam was definitely the best of all of the '90s 2 idents, and I especially like the haunting music. It's a pity both these idents were among those that got thrown out at the end of 1999, and replaced with some not-quite-so-good ones.
Of course Steam and Diary actually had their initial on-screen outing (minus the BBC logo) on BBC1 on 15th Feb 1995, as part of a behind the scenes feature on 'How Do They Do That'.
Not just them, either- it's also happy birthday to Blade, Copper Cut Out (colour and B&W), Glass, Paint, Paper, Water (normal and reflection), Shadow, Sign, and Silk, all of which were introduced 14 years ago today!

I thought paint, blade, glass, silk were all in the original set

That's right, the 16th February 1991. Quite a co-incidence that actually - another 2 idents debuted on the 4th anniversary of the original set's outing.
Steam was the best 2 though! I agree with you Robert - I find it odd how they withdrew it at the New Year's Eve 1999 axing. It should have stayed all the way until November 2001 IMO.

Today, we don't see the likes of those idents, shame. Instead we have a strange, robotic two moving about the screen and a load of people dancing on BBC One.

Doh! thought it said 10 years, not 14
No, the original set was introduced on 16th February 1991 - 14 years ago! Steam and Diary were another two additions to the set and debuted, co-incidently, exactly 4 years later on 16th February 1995 - 10 years ago.

I prefer the white 2 to the breakdancing yadyids on BBC1 though! I hope the breakdancers do go when the new BBC One controller comes!
