This will probably be quite good but not worry the ratings. Also wondering how well it will work weekly - these sort of things are usually better nightly.

True, but we can't seem to do nightly over here. It looks better than most recent attempts at emulating The Daily Show but the election show last year was still a bit......meh. Brooker seemed way out of his depth without a script, Carr's strenght isn't really political satire, Mitchell is great in small doses but overly-smug and Laverne is just pointless.

Agree completely with your statements here. I'm not quite sure why Laverne is rated so highly, she's mediocre at best on The Culture Show and her 6Music radio show is pretty mundane. She seemed the odd one out on Alternative Election Night, just as an 'all rounder' TV presenter.

As much as I like Charlie Brooker, I agree that without a script he always seems rather uncomfortable. Look at any interview with him, or when he's on a panel show.

I'm quite surprised really they got all four back for the series - was expecting one or two changes in the line-up. Didn't think it would be the sort of show Jimmy Carr would do on a weekly basis.

Only thing I've ever really seen Laverne excel at was as a guest host of Never Mind the Buzzcocks a few years ago (so much so I thought she might have been offered the job full-time).

She seemed to thrive in more of a "free role" (her participation in this show sounds very restrained), although I guess it's debatable how much input she had with jokes, etc.

Looking forward to this though.

Have to say I'm looking forward to this too. Probably as close to The Daily Show from the US and The Chaser's War from Australia we're going to get.

I notice Charlie has been tweeting about letting them know any interesting moments from the news @10oClockLive or Facebook http://www.facebook.com/10oclocklive although I'm sure there's some been some good material since the Election show to keep them going. C4 has certainly got faith in the show given the run it's got.

It shouldn't be promoted or thought of as a British 'Daily Show'. Once that comparison is made it's an instant failure because it'll never be The Daily Show. Every previous 'British answer to The Daily Show' has failed, as did all the 'British David Letterman's over the years

Such a programme needs to develop and evolve by itself and find it's own identity, after all The Daily Show wasn't The Daily Show we know today when it started.

Would you call BBC4's Late Edition with Marcus Brigstoke a failure? That was compared to The Daily Show by Brigstoke himself.

Anyway, the comparisons have already been made. I can't remember who it was but one of the comedians on twitter asked if it was the reason The Daily Show had been pushed to once a week at 11pm on More 4 - and there are many similar comments by others.

BTW Charlie Brooker also has a new show on BBC2 next week - How TV Ruined Your Life. It looks like it's basically Screenwipe, but looking back at TV in general, rather than just over the last week or so, which Screenwipe did anyway.

Indeed the first show tackles the concept of "fear" and looks at Public Information Films - which Screenwipe/Newswipe have definitely done anyway, so perhaps it's just a rehashed repeat.

After reading about it and watching the preview clip on Youtube... I can honestly say I have no idea what Brooker has done here. It'll definitely have to be something I need to work out by watching it.

Well it didn't last long did it?

It was virtually identical to The Daily Show in terms of format but that's the problem. You're never going to emulate a programme like that, a programme needs to find and develop it's own style and voice
