Does anyone else find the +1 channels completly pointless?? I recently got Freeview in my bedroom and found More4+1 and E4+1 on them and tought ....

WHY? all the +1 channels on sky, well they all show stuff thats repeated on the channel twice a day anyway?.

BBC1+1 or BBC2+1 or ITV1+1 ....now that would be useful, But quite frankly as they exist now I find them a complete waste of brandwith. Anyone elese have thoughts on the subject.

*Edit. Also ive explained them 100 times over to my parents but still they cannot 'grasp' how they work ''This is the same episode as before'' Mad argghhhhh!!!

I don't mind these channels and find them useful at times. If I got in late and I forgot to record, I can watch it in full at a early time then waiting the whole of the day to watch.

I use them when I tune in to the main channel and find something I'd watch is just about to finish - I +1 it and wait a little if necessary and then I can watch it. Thats the idea of +1s and the bonus is that you can use them to record if you have clashing timers (or even just watch if two progs colide and one has a +1).

There's also a +2 channel now aswell - FX+ operates a two hour timeshift.

+1s may be ok for satellite (although most of the programmes are repeats of repeats or will be repeated constantly in time anyway), but for Freeview I think they should be banned, the bandwidth is too valuable and Ofcom (or whoever controlls these things) should award space to companies offering something different. But then we all know what a waste of space Ofcom is...

They're a fudge basically. A repeat of a programme shown within a certain time is counted as one transmission, so the viewing figures for the one showing can be added to the figures for the repeat - hence the final 'rating' is higher.

Hate them in theory - very useful in practice, especially as with most Freeview boxes you can't watch one channel, tape another.

More4+1 / E4+1 are officially only securing space for C4 to use in the future though, and it's preferably IMO to another shopping channel - though if the recent Freeview channel auctions had been based on content rather than cash, I doubt C4 would have won these slots! I'd rather have C4+1 than More4+1 though!

As for Sky - I think they should be limited to just one timeshift channel, delayed one hour. And now with Sky+, PVRs and soon video on demand it won't be long until they are unneccessary.

i think the +1 channels would be much more useful if they were an entire 24 hours behind. 1 hour isn't good enough to be of any use, personally.

Sky tried that for a bit with the old Sky Mix when it first started (admittedly only with peak time programmes) - but it didn't work - although it was useful in the days before I had Sky+ when certain programmes clashed with Stargate!!!! Laughing

In regards to the question "What's the Point" it's simply for people who have missed the programme on 1hr or 2hr before, or they missed a bit or they want to see it again.

+1-ing the five terrestrials is a bit stupid as EPG numbers would be very confusing and silly.

An interactive service would be helpful though, a bit like Sky Movies Multistart.

Aren't +1 channels cheap as chips to run anyway?

After all, all you're doing is basically recording yourself and rebroadcasting that output on a different feed with a +1 DOG.

Most be some commercial value in it which would explain why most channels jumped on the idea pretty much at the same time.
