Studio is nice but the titles are in the wrong font, dosent match up with the font on the Aston’s. all they had to do was to mimic North West Tonight(without the animations), they have it perfect across the Pennines.

The usual BBC local design elements. Red sofa, red and white LED strip’s and faux newsroom background. Same old stuff.

What I like is that the red led strip above the screens is a nice tone, and not over bright like other local studios. Someone mentioned the need of a sofa because of the magazine style of the show, but then doesn’t a newsroom view contradict that?

We seem to be at a stage now where there is no creativity in the regions, BBC News has had the same style rehashed for the past decade plus, and ITV News can do no better than reflective black shiny panels, and a view angle so wide that a lot of the view is cut off in many cases. Just look at Central East Midlands view. They’ve essentially ended up with just diry rooftops because of the way they’ve had to crop the view, and not to mention the ridiculously wide angle they need to film in to get the side screens in view to display a graphic.

Seem’s like little thought goes into these sets.

The music on the titles is similar to Spotlight South West - which I do like. If LN East Yorks and Lincs change there titles would like to see a part map showing Lincs and East Yorks sweeping in at the start as Spotlight has done showing there South West Patch and maybe the name Look North next to the Humber Bridge much like Look North NE and Cumbria has done with the Angel of the North. I do though find the bland backdrop of the news studio boring - Spotlight showing Plymouth for e.g and far more refreshing and even a real backdrop like on Granada Reports.

Be careful what you wish for. The Belmont programme tried to mimic NWT’s titles and we ended up with this monstrosity:

The continuing use of the same fake newsroom view is baffling. Even moreso now NBH is open and you cut from the real version to the fake one.

They could do with a new fake newsroom for the regions that doesn't look like NBH. Or use something else entirely.

It's interesting to note that BBC Nations & Regions all had faux windows of a city skyline view in the early 2000s, but now most have just a faux newsroom backdrop instead (albeit that some - e.g. Midlands Today and East Midlands Today - still incorporate a little bit of outdoor view into their CGI office construct).

Conversely, ITV/STV regional news (and, soon, UTV as well) now all have faux/real "windows" of outdoor views as backdrops which wasn't the case until at least 2004.

Surprised that the newsroom backdrop isn't even animated - now that they've got screens all the way round you think they'd try and make it look a bite more realistic!

The whole frosted thing I don’t think NBH even use it in any of the studios, it’s a remnants from the TVC era and nearly all the regional outlets still use it.

I'm in the Belmont region so got to see the other news programmes compared to normal.

Calendar East looks so much nicer than Calendar West. They have never managed to find a better background view for West besides than the almost unidentifiable dull Leeds city centre view.

And on Look North, I see Peter still presents it like he's on the radio. All the time checks, the 'great to have you with us' 'we will have more weather photos on Monday around about the same time' etc etc

I can’t imagine weather photos working on the radio though Wink

Although we'd kinda worked it out already, Owain had a look behind the set on Instagram Stories and it confirmed that it's LED panels being used (which makes sense because of the small space). I assume that's pricey compared to using screens as East Mids/West Mids and others have done but gives them more flexibility?

All he needs is to get a new studio which is him in a comfy chair next to a roaring fire and playing Phil Collins in between the reports and he's sorted.
