It's a bit much to say it's a 'brand new look'. It's just a refresh of an existing template all round really. If it were really a brand new look it would have more than about half a dozen comments on this thread.

Is that the exact same sofa?

Definitely the same table.

The old cameras really don’t help it, but it just looks like they’ve tried to recreate the EMT set with about a tenth of the budget. The generic background gives Calendar a run for it's money as one of the ugliest in regional news.

Having screens all around the set gives a lot more flexibility, not least when redressing for other shows. Just a shame they haven't managed to do a tech refresh to HD.

It's a shame that the picture quality is still blurry, and I don't think the titles don't look very nice.

The new set is OK and better than the previous one but I think it could have been much nicer with some newer NBH-style furniture (maybe even a desk) and a rostrum, it looks quite bland and sparse as it is. The newsroom background is pretty naff as well - on the close up slots it does look quite blurry and empty and the frosting isn't great.

Yes it’s definitely not a new look, just a slight revision on the old look.

When the screens are displaying the generic newsroom image, I’d say most viewers wouldn’t know anything had changed.

Regarding the sofa, it’s the same one that used to be grey isn’t it, getting in for a decade ago.

Yet more tinkering with the brand and taking things away from the original uniform look. Baffles me why they don’t take a leaf out of ITV’s book and enforce things properly. Aren’t things due a Reith refresh soon anyway? What’s the point of a change now?

The headlines vamp dosent sound right, it sounds like someone is playing an Indian Tabla, where the beeps are meant to be, and the titles, do they change season, its going to look odd in Winter and its using the wrong font, the studio is ok when they use something other then the generic newsroom backdrop, but the astons are still the same, fade on, fade off and BBC Look North is still in Gill Sans on the astons, the Live graphic is meant to be Helvetica but its Gill Sans and the font weight is wrong, so its all bit of a mish mash really.

Its all a bit messed up in Yorkshire land, but the average viewer couldn't care less as long as Harry Gration is there.

The gallery is quite modern, why does everything look so ancient on air like the astons Confused

It's getting on for 15 years old. I think they replaced the monitor stack with a multi viewer fairly recently but the actual kit is much older.

I guess they are waiting to see what comes of the virtualisation project before upgrading.

It's an actual Aston (Green) used for the graphics. That's not modern in any sense of the word!

Plenty of regions still rely on Astons. They’re bomb proof things and work exceptionally well. The one I most recently used in a regional centre is dated 1991 but has only crashed a handful of times, it has BBC Woodhouse Lane written on the bottom of it 😳

As for the relaunch - WELL DONE - looks fantastic, clean, modern, evolution rather then revolution, a very nice look which shows off the space they have without trying to cram too much in. And I think sofas are actually perfectly ok for regional news shows. Let’s not forget that the regional news magazines are still just that - they bridge between National News and The One Show - starting with the days top current affairs and often ending with features and “good news, feel good” items. Top work all round.
