A familiar Look North face reading Central's overnight headlines in 1988 - those specs are very much of the era though!

The 'Red Mountain' Coffee advert at 2.54 in - I still can't watch that without thinking back to the Smith & Jones parody of it.

After an almost cut for cut recreation of the original, the coffee is taken to the table, where Mel Smith takes a sip and then theatrically spray-spits out a mouthful, uttering the line "Urghh - someone has gobbed in my coffee"

More comical moments tonight with John Shires and Gaynor. Certainly not the B team in my eyes.

Look North didn't air tonight, we just got 5 mins of the news channel instead.

Rather than airing all the trailers, a few mins of news and then crashing out, I think airing BBC London made more sense.

Was just about to post the same. Is the NC the sustaining feed these days rather than London? I presume that's just what we get if a region fails to opt nowadays.

I find it disappointing that the NC doesn't routinely at least attempt to hit timings that create something approach a seamless outcue for if/when it ends up replacing any regional bulletins on BBC One. Perhaps not so easy for the likes of 5-min weekend bulletins, but surely do-able for the likes of the main weeknight programme (with an extra-long amount of weather & trailers faffing on the approach to 7pm)?

The news content could even aim to be a bit "round the regions"-ish at those times (remember "News 24 Tonight", anyone?), but with just bog standard BBC News branding rather than any "UK Today" type of name.

Maybe not routinely, but surely somebody the monitoring centre in Birmingham could give Studio E a call if a region has had problems and they are being used to sustain?

Yeah, I suppose it'd only only be worth doing that routinely if it was used as the default BBC One England HD content rather than those red sodding holding caption thingumybobs.

It is (except during Breakfast). Quite honestly, it would be more 'seamless' if they went back to using London as the sustaining service, if it's fine for Breakfast, then why not other times ? (Of course, it can't be the NC anyway during Breakfast !)

From a slightly irrelevant but geeky point of view, is the NC technically still the sustaining feed during Breakfast, but it just happens that the NC shows London?

Technically Breakfast is the sustaining service isn't it? It just happens to be taking London. (It's Breakfast's gallery that puts London on air, or finds a feed of Tunbridge Wells if London can't get to air)

London clearly only ends up being the regional replacement on NC Breakfast for lack of any other realistic option. It's telling that the NC breaks away from Breakfast at the start of the 08:27-ish regional slot in favour of trailers/weather faffing, thus limiting the number of national screenings of London News per morning as much as possible (it is clearly not regarded as the preferred/ideal solution). I suppose arguably they could have e.g. the main Breakfast presenters doing a newspaper review (or some such thing) as the NC regional replacement instead?
