During whichever particular decade/century/lifetime they ever actually sodding well get around to introducing an ITV West Country HD (getting Central West in Cornwall is way beyond ridiculous Rolling Eyes ), you can bet your granny that it'll be the "HTV" version carried pan-regionally.

I'd be surprised if ITV West Country HD was far away. Tests have appeared for Anglia, followed by Tyne Tees and Yorkshire over the last few days. I've no idea if a full roll-out is planned, but it'd seem strange for such a large region to be ignored. As you say though, it'll probably be the HTV opt.

I would have thought so, the 'Westcountry' region is only 1.5 (ish) million population, and <cough> not terribly affluent, I think it'll end up merged with the HTV West bit for HD and '+1'.

Is the Calandar news programme native HD, or just upscaled BTW ?

It's native HD. I suspect when they moved Calendar into the main YTV building they made sure it was fully HD equipped.

QQ - do the new sets even look any better in HD?

Good to see BBC Yorkshire continuing to punch above its weight with regional documentaries that get picked up by network. They opted out for a doco about the Flying Scotsman at 12.30 today which will be shown on BBC Four tomorrow night.

Leeds has always been a bit of a centre of excellence, hence why so many there go on nationally throughout the years.

It is, although it's really not supposed to be - it's not a Network Production Centre. They're probably not really meant to be getting network commissions like Helicopter Heroes.

Back in the 80's Leeds had a regular daytime show: Gardeners Direct Line - it was basically a gardening phone in. I seem to remember that the presenter had a little podium next to him with a couple of buttons and lights on the front saying '1' '2' and '3' and he'd select the calls on that. Presumably the phone in facilities there were limited.

Three lines was probably enough, and the buttons were likely fake anyway!

It was originally a regional programme on Friday nights iirc then got picked up by network. Presumably from a corner of the Look North studio.

CBBC used to follow the daytime version and Andy Crane used to randomly link up with them to get advice on growing Brian, the Broom Cupboard tomato plant. I think I read an interview with Crane which referenced it and he pretty much said they just did it for the hell of it, because they could.

I have started to hate the phrase "Calendar Region".

Isn't it time to call it Yorkshire, in the way London used to include Reading and the South East in general?

I doubt the hundreds of thousands of people in Lincolnshire and North Notts will be very happy with that. Then again they've put up with Yorkshire Television/ITV Yorkshire since 1974.
