Is having a national presenter or someone from another region do the forecast when the usual presenter isn't available something that is much more commonplace than before, or has it always passed me by previously? I'd always seen the ITV National Weather team to be very separate from the local presenters, but increasingly I'll see one of the national presenters doing a local weather forecast. The same, of course, goes for the BBC, with the weather hubs meaning fewer freelance forecasters, although on Look East Jim Bacon from Weatherquest still frequently pops up, as he has done for many years.

It been happening for about a year or maybe a year and a half since they established these weather hubs for weekends and the region's were basically cut down to having one forecaster with no cover

(Of course these things go in cycles, not long ago all weather in the north came from Yorkshire, then they all gained 1 or 2 presenters each, possibly because it was seen how important the 'weather chat' and viewers photos etc was to the viewers, later then they reduced the presenters to what we have now. Granada has always been in a state of flux though due to various illnesses, maternity leave and police investigations)

The cover is seemingly at random, but when it is a national presenter it won't be the same one as is doing the Nationals that day.

Kerry's Gosney did Monday including a weather chat from Granada but alas it didn't continue more than that day.

Talking about weather, on Look North there seems to be dozens of presenters kicking around now. Paul, Lisa, Keeley, Kay, Clare. Jen Bartram seems to be back, they had Sara on the other morning.

I know Lucy and Alex cover for the regions on a regular basis, along with Amanda Houston who does National and Anglia, but I think Becky Mantin has covered on ITV London once.

Im sure there have been a couple of instances where I've seen Lucy do regional weather with either Amanda or Manali Lukha doing national.

Is Kerry no longer based at Yorkshire then?

No Kerrie left YTV in 2009 (?) although turned up time to time on the actual studio. But mainly based at Granada. Not sure if she is permanent now at Granada instead of Emma Jesson.

I think they are a victim of their own success. Several of the team have a journalism background which makes them a convenient option to cover other things.

Jen is based in London but often covers in the various regions.

Kay does quite a bit of radio work, Radio York every Saturday and various cover shifts in Yorkshire and Radio Manchester.

I think Keeley is doing stuff for Inside Out. Paul does some Radio too, produced in York. Without wanting to speculate on personal circumstances too much, Lisa is recently back from maternity leave and it may well suit her to stick to Breakfast shifts.

Having the likes of Claire and Jen available to cover is a great advantage and gives them a lot of flexibility.

Weatherquest are currently doing two days a week on BBC Look East - usually Thursday and Friday while Sara Thornton does Monday to Wednesday. Dan Holley regularly appears - probably more frequently than Jim and we still see Chris Bell occasionally.

ITV Yorkshire HD launches next Wednesday according to this...

No indication as to which sub-region it will show yet. Emley would be the obvious one given it has significantly more viewers, although ITV Yorkshire +1 shows Belmont for some reason, so who knows?

Any reason why it can't be both on Freeview HD or is there only one set of encoding kit for the whole of Yorkshire and Lincolnshire?

Lovely to see Gaynor and Jon covering Calendar this week. I have always rated them highly. Funnily enough they were presenting together 20 years ago too - you don't see that with many regional news teams these days!

I may be wrong, but I'd guess if they can only manage one sub-region across the whole of Yorkshire on +1 SD on Freeview, getting both on HD might be over optimistic.

Incidentally, does anyone know why Belmont is the +1 service? Given the larger population covered by Emley Moor, I'd have thought it'd have been logical and made more commercial sense to have Emley on +1.
