I can't believe this set design has been signed off nationally.
Neither can I, I just don't understand the black bars. They could have done so many different options that would look better.
An infinite number to be precise, which means there must be constraints.
That said, there are also a large number of options that would look far worse - such as sticking three screens on their sides in the background.
I suspect a key reason for going with the black glass areas is to stop it looking like a re-coloured version of the BBC Birmingham set.
Also, with the view essentially being 5 16x9 screens in a row, it's a ridicoulously wide angle for a view, and must be a right pain to film their skyline backdrops with these new sets.
Not really. 4K camera + wide angle lens would do it pretty easily.
I think I would have preferred to see them build a new set around the current nice projection screens they use. At least they give a nice large view.
And do the projectors have another 5+ years left in them? Would that reflect the national branding?
I don't see why they've been soo tight on controlling the design.
Because a set is part of your brand. By making them all look the same they have a nationwide uniform look, plus can take advantage of benefits of scale when ordering the components that make up the set. Going down the bespoke-for-every-region route would be more expensive, take longer and would probably end up being poorer quality.
I suspect the Wales build was a prototype, and we'll see a fairly quick roll out of this set to the other regions now. Strangely, ITV will probably have already thought of all your issues with the design, and either decided it's good enough (the black bars), or it's not actually a problem (how can we fill 5 screens with pictures? :O ), they don't need you to come up with reasons why they shouldn't have made the choices they have.
In my opinion the only issue is that it looks too much like the BBC local news sets, although maybe they're hedging their bets on a BBC regional set replacement coming along soon.
