Gets beyond a joke really. If ITV doesn't want to do regional news any more properly, then why doesn't it petition itself to not do it all?
And throw away their PSB obligations ? They could, and they casually considered that a few years ago.
Advantages, no need to bother with that expensive regional news, no need to have presence on all 750ish England/Wales/Border transmitters.
Disadvantage, they'd lose their prominent EPG positions for ITV 1. It's a cost/benefit trade off (as ever)
Absolutely, but ITV is still a 'pull'. Corrie, the Tired Factor etc. I'm sure ITV would come to some agreement with the carriers. The regional aspect is just a bygone heritage strand to the days when it was a much stronger network.
The absence of underwater Hull from the national coverage is noticeable by its absence. When parts of a major city are underwater you would think even London Centric BBC News would cover it.
Locally Look Levy hasn't done a bad job - but since the water is up to Uncle Peetas front door at Victoria dock they aren't going to ignore it. Perhaps we will be invited in to his house if it is flooded
Whilst I understand and fully appreciate the significance of the news overnight from South Africa and in no way wish to speak ill of the dead; Look North Leeds took the wrong decision to crowbar a local angle on this news into their bulletins this morning in my view. Mr Mandela's passing was and is being handled perfectly well with the News Channel and network programming therefore I would expect that regional news would look at what is happening locally and I maintain that this is especially so when there are more pressing local issues with regards to the climatic conditions and the disruption it has caused to report on. I accept that Look North Leeds did cover the weather and the concomitant problems that it caused; I just feel that viewers would have been better served with the weather taking the lead rather than the local view of an international story and particularly when the local view didn't really add anything to the sum of knowledge as one would quite rightly expect books of condolence to be set-up and flags to be flown at half mast.
Interesting that Calendar and Look North were reporting on the flooding in Whitby, I'm not sure either programme can be received in Whitby. People not familiar with the tv regional boundaries would expect this though, so it is right.
Not sure it was right Look North Leeds leading with Harry on an OB from the Mandela Centre in Leeds tonight. Calendar West lead with the flooding in Scarborough.

Just lazy news editors who have to find a local angle on international news.

Sorry, totally disagree.
Far too often the argument is that news from other parts of the world, doesn't interest some people because they claim it isn't relevant to their area.
When a news story happens that you can make locally relevant, you should. I don't believe that if it's not in your area, it's not relevant to you. This is why community feeling in many parts of the country has been weakened. Anything that can be done to counter that nonsense and help rebuild community spirit, even in the tiniest of ways, is a good thing in my book.

Yes, last night's South Today at 22:35 just carried on with the Mandelathon, 80% of the bulletin was devoted to
tenuously related local stories. They've lost the bloody plot.
Perhaps I should ring them up, and they can come and interview me, I spend two months every year working in South Africa, I think that more than qualifies me for inclusion

Thankfully, South Today Oxford at 22:35 was mostly normal Oxon/Bucks/Swindon news stories, with only one shoehorned Mandela item quite far into the bulletin (final story before the weather, IIRC). Mind you, that "news" was about his visit to an Oxford University lecture theatre ELEVEN YEARS AGO!!!
