Sheffield and south Yorkshire in general is a big overlap area, with Emley, Belmont and Sheffield all being the best option in signal quality terms in different areas.

Whether the casual viewer is aware of that is debatable, a Sheffield background is probably just as big as turn off as a Leeds one to the people of Lincolnshire I'd suggest.

I think this is one of the problems with "one size fits all" studio set design for multiple regions. Given the obvious problems with finding a universally acceptable choice of "window on the world" backdrop view for a sub-region such as Calendar South (Sheffield? Lincoln? Hull? No choice will seem "right" to viewers in all parts of the patch), it would surely be better if Calendar had a generic newsroom backdrop or something at all times?

In some regions, a "window" is fine. For example, I'm sure nobody in the entire ITV West patch would disagree with Bristol/Clifton being used to represent the West of England region as whole. Ditto with Birmingham for the West Midland Region, and a few other acceptable examples.

But, for the likes of Calendar (especially South), Meridian (especially West a.k.a. Thames Valley & South Cost) and Anglia (especially West), no choice of "window" backdrop would be entirely ideal, so it'd be better to not have one at all surely?

Have to agree. Random technical question though - if they used a green screen would it be technically possible to transmit the same programme live but with a different backdrop in each region?

I'd wondered this too, but sadly don't know the answer.

Well TT&B used to overlay different respective "North East Tonight" and "Lookaround" DOGs during the pan-regional latter half of the 6pm programme, so maybe what you suggest is technically possible in some way.

It probably could be done, but it would mean having virtual studio technology in place to allow the cameras to move. I can't see ITV wanting to pay for that any time soon!

I think you're probably right about the expense involved. Besides, haven't ITV just splashed out around £30m on new HD equipment for network and regional news so they can upgrade next year?

There would be no point in transmitting the same content with different backgrounds.
The whole point of different programmes is the there are, um, different.
