Congratulations to Harry Gration, who has been awarded the MBE for Services to Broadcasting in the Queen's Birthday Honours List. No Damehood for Christa though

Why should she be honoured? She's not known outside a local TV area and her now defunct newspaper column.
It always puzzles me that folk get kudos rewards for their professional work.
I've done nearly 40 years in my trade and don't expect anymore than a pay cheque at the end of every month.

Funny, my Granddad was up for a BEM in the 1960s for voluntarily running a cinema on a RAF camp. But because he got paid an 'honorarium' payment which was only about £50 a year in our money for inconvenience, he wasn't allowed to be put forward for it!

I did notice that there wasn't a picture of Christa on the wall between the studio and the canteen. Hastily removed?

Yes there was, it was her and Harry. The last one before they went through the day to where the crowd was.

I see.
But back to my point - they are also public servants in that our license pays for their salary's etc so I'm still puzzled by the MBE. I'm sure he's put in the time but as I suggested earlier it's no different for other long term employees of the industry who rarely get the recognition they deserve.

Meanwhile, I see our regular LN Breakfast presenter has swopped "gonna be/going to be" for "now" several times throughout the bulletin at the start of several scripts.

Harry does a lot of work for charities and third-sector groups in Yorkshire and is definitely worthy of receiving his MBE.

Off the top of my head, he's supported York Hospital Radio down the years and usually gets involved in broadcasts when time allows. He regularly hosts community events in the city - he's a regular MC at the York Press's Community Pride Awards, and he also presented a humanitarian awards ceremony I attended a few years ago at York Minster - I got the chance to interview him there and he was a proper gentleman; patient, passionate and intelligent. I'm certain Harry also supports community sports group in the county too.

In other LN news, it was also announced the other day (I think via Ian on Twitter) that Amanda Harper and Jamie Coulson have welcomed a baby girl to the world.

Like you I've met and indeed worked alongside Harry, and as you say he was a proper gentleman and thoroughly professional. The award though is for services to broadcasting not his outside valuable charity work.
