I don't know any background to this, but did look through some news coverage. I found the last sentence from the BBC spokesman in this DM article to be a little odd.
That paragraph grabbed my attention when I read that at the time too.
That quote (assuming it's the bit about freelancers being responsible for their own tax affairs) may simply be a result of the BBC spokesperson being asked a question about whether Christa is in dispute over the proposal that long term freelancers should become staff. The spokesperson has said that vague sentence in reply and the DM have used it in that context to try to imply something that may not be there.

Surely they can find someone better than Nicola Rees, she's terrible! I hate the way she always has to comment on every story. I don't think Harry enjoys working with her either

Charlotte Leeming is the best I've seen filling in for Christa - she's quite natural at it, and she's been working at Look North for at least 12 years so probably deserves a break over others in that respect.
I like the idea of Clare Frisby being main presenter too - she's experienced and very warm and friendly on screen (despite rushing through the Breakfast updates at 3000mph!) but I don't know how she'd be on the main show - it's been such a long time.
80% of tonight's Yorkshire Look North were purely entertainment/showbiz stories.
Yes a tribute to Graham Walker from The Grumbleweeds was right, yet they missed out the fact that the boys came from Leeds (how the hell can they miss that?), concentrating on their work 'on the Northern club circuit'. After that came a story about Suranne Jones, plugging a play, then another actress, plugging a Bollywood film.

Look North or London Tonight?
...or even Look North ULL.
The 'down the line' interviews for so called celebs flogging books were only axed after a deluge of complaints. Uncle Levy like to do them but in the end they had to get rid of them. They just needed a strong enough editor to stand up and say no more.
Oh dear, Calendar appears to have crashed off air - black screen for the last five or so minutes.

Glad it's not just me then, I've got a blue screen. They handed back from ITN, Christine was doing a recap of the main story and the screen froze. ITV HD is working fine, but I'm not bothered about Granada Reports
