ANYWAY>>>> my point is that my Mum & Dad feel a stronger connection to Leeds/York/Harrogate and would rather get the Leeds Look North (they do in fact use their Sky box to watch it more often than not). They have zero personal affiliation to Worksop and Lincoln. The Hull region is bonkers on most levels, and Hull people don't like it.

But on the South Bank, though, I have no connection to the likes of York whereas in the past two weeks I have travelled to both Hull - which is only 45 minutes away - and also Lincoln, which is about an hour away. I find it a perfectly logical set-up and it works for me. If you bring back the old pan-Yorkshire one you'll be annoying people in Lincolnshire and there seems to be no logical place that can go - East Anglia is far too far away, if anything they have more to do with the East Midlands. And it'll mean worse coverage for them. I don't mean in terms of the presenters, who some posters on here seem to have issues with, I mean in terms of how much news they get. I find it relevant and interesting and I'm glad it exists.

The way to get away with scrapping the non region is to have an 5-8 min opt from a small Hull/East Riding based studio. The problem of course is that Lincolnshire people have very little interest in Leeds stories but East Yorkshire people don't want to know about Lincoln stories. Look Levy never mentions the Yorkshire Cricket results - the excuse used is that Lincolnshire people aren't interested. Of course East Riding folk are part of Gods own county and have been treated appallingly in respect of news coverage - news which is local to them has been cut off.

The political reason it happened was that the great £24 million Hull experiment was made possible by Kingston Communications foray into TV services & the fact there was supposed to be a 'local news' service for the North Bank which was cancelled. When they pulled the plug on those they had to keep going as it would have been red faces all round. It actually cost a fortune in redundant equipment, an expensive lease on Queenies Court and no money for programming or staff. They didn't replace Helen Fospero/Morton as they needed the money for a new satellite truck (the old one was knackered) and a reporter in Lincoln.

By now enough time and DG's have passed to rid us of this expensive white elephant. The conditions are perfect. You have the old Hull HLRP in place in Leeds & Harry near retirement. Since Y&L viewers only watch for Levy & Paul merge the damn thing with him at the helm & put the money into quality news gathering instead of fluff and nonsense.

The problem Troggles is that Hull *believe* that they are producing a quality show and that Levy is a well qualified, experienced journo. They are so deluded. No wonder David "I'm David Lloyd" Lloyd walked out after a few weeks....

On the Leeds side, presumably they're a bit understaffed on the newsgathering side with their award winning star VJ keeping the sofa warm rather than out with her camera?

Why do you call it a non region? Clearly it is a region.

Perhaps I should qualify that, its not a natural region - its people have nothing in common. certainly either side of the Humber. From the feedback reports I have read people in Lincolnshire consider they are in the midlands not the north.

It all bubbled up when they had the Look North name change debacle a few years ago. East Coast Today was the preferred choice however 'last minute' votes arrived to keep the status quo. It was a very unsavoury episode of which the lid was kept very firmly on.

The original HLRP (before the split) Colin Philpott used to say 'the only thing this region has in common is a transmitter' That's certainly been shown to be true.

Are any regions truly natural? What do the residents of Filey have little in common with the residents of Berwick, Whitehaven, or Newcastle? They're all covered by Look North NE&C. (In the case of Filey, that doesn't apply on Sky, where the news comes from Leeds - not that they ever cover any stories here).

There is a point there - Reading is within the Meridian region, so what does it have in common with Southampton? Both cities are almost the same distance as Lincoln and Hull are.

Less than it does with London. It's a commuter town, and many aerials in the town are directed at Crystal Palace,
rather than Hannington. (Also a legacy, because CP was there way before Hannington)
The problem is, that TV regions are based on transmitter footprints, and Hannington's covers areas stretching from the northern suburbs of Southampton, to places such as Bracknell and Camberley.
So you just can't have everyone being served with the most appropriate local news.

Ironically satellite, with post code mapping of regions can (and does) give a far better option for receiving the most appropriate regional programme.

Especially with Amanda Harper going off on maternity leave and Dan Johnson on secondment with BBC Breakfast! I've noticed both Nicola and Harry doing more reports at the moment too.

Debacle indeed. I hope the voting mechanism was free or else that'd be another Daily Mail scandal in waiting. They were never going to change the name, one of the finalists was 'The Peter Levy Show' which showed how serious the competition was, I'm sure they even still shared some sort of programming with Leeds at that point as well.
