Steve in Pudsey

Sorry to go off on yet another tangent - but does anyone have a particular favourite Calendar/Look North title sequence? My favourite Calendar titles would have to be the extremely shortlived mini-revamp ones from the aforementioned greeny-purple era, IIRC they were in use from around September 1994 up until early 1996. The logo was the same as before (the YTV area map encased within a green polo-mint circle) but this time was placed at an angle. The logo had all sorts of weird, random CGI shapes flying around it before the "CALENDAR" text settled on screen. These titles were pretty OTT graphic-wise, but this particular sequence saw the introduction of the familiar theme they ended up keeping until the 2000 revamp. Surprisingly, there's absolutely nothing on the entire web documenting this look, just the looks before and after it. There is literally only this one brief still from the end of a mid-afternoon news summary: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CVKywFe5_KI&t=1m50s

Is this the one?

I presume everyone is aware of the 5 minute long version of the Calendar theme, used in the start up sequence in the early 80s?

Thik you are a bit early with that Steve in Pudsey.

Think Nicky is referring to a refreshed set of the polo mint (spearmint !) titles. Those Polo mark 1 were first used when they set up the studio on a stage in the "Yorkshire Television Newscentre in Leeds". I can't rememebr them personally as thought they went from Polo mint to the titles featuring a big C which were adopted when Mike Morris joined with Christa. That studio I am sure was still in the Newscentre but the other way round so didnt see the newsecentre?

He is talking about this era, when the polo mint was on it's side rather than flat on

Thanks to wherever this image came from years ago.

When you consider how rubbish the below set is, I suppose it's quite likely that it was located in the newsroom, in the same place as the previous set?

I'm certain the "sideways Polo mint" (a nice link to York, no?) came into use in 1993 - one of my YouTube files from August 1993 has these titles used on a Calendar East bulletin.

As for my favourite Look North and Calendar title sequences, mine are 1984-1988 (the cube/flag titles) for the BBC and 1986-1988 (the CGI calendar) for ITV.

Thanks for the pic of the "C" era Andrew. It's worse than I remember - and yes that does suggest that it was on the rostrum in the newsroom.

I seem to rememebr Nick Powell presenting for a couple of weeks in the Newsroom itself between sets

Thanks for the pics Andrew - yes, that first one is indeed the look I'm referring to! Nice to see a pic of Christine's early days at Calendar as well. Very Happy

That 1996-1997 studio was truly awful - I had a chat not so long ago with one of the newsroom journalists who worked at YTV at the time and that set was indeed still in the newsroom, but it wasn't soundproofed or anything so all the journalists working behind them were told to shut up at six every evening! The following set (1997-2000) was built in a separate studio and looked much nicer too.

I've just found the video Col - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0E9cBpZzuhQ
But this isn't the "sideways" look - this is from the previous look where the Polo mint is face on. It was used only until Sep/Oct 1994, when the Polo mint was turned sideways and the music changed too. They continued presenting from the newsroom but I'm pretty sure they also presented from a desk on the floor of the newsroom itself towards the end of that sideways look, possibly while the awful 1996 set was being constructed.

I did work experience at the Calendar South Newsdesk in Sheffield in January 1993 and they were using those titles and graphics then

There is a relatively new video on the Calendar pages on TV Ark featuring a report from the launch of Calendar South, also interesting that there was no attempt to pretend that Calendar East was coming from anywhere but Leeds with the studio overlooking the newsroom

Plus various other videos that help with these dates with of course the 1995 look excluded completely!

This is an interesting video from 1992 (presumably pre-dates the polo ?) of Gaynor Barnes reading the headlines. There is a map of 'our particular part of the region' in the corner of the newsroom, which I notice is not seen in the clips on TV Ark.

What a dreadful capitalised 'N' in News

As an added bonus, Dame Maggie Mash reads the weather and announces into an episode of Heidi.

Personally, I always thought this look from the late 90s was Calendar's best. Nice to have the chevron in the titles...

I hated the final non-corporate look with the red set and Tupperware desk... although the reworked theme tune for that era was rather fine.

As for Look North, I always rather liked this from the mid 90s Sophie Raworth / Mike McCarthy era...

Incidentally, somewhere on VHS I've got a recording of a rare version of those Look North titles with the current BBC logo. They had to be re-edited when the BBC logo changed on Saturday 4th October 1997, just two days before the Look North titles changed completely on Monday 6th to the big 'N' look.

Ref the Calendar East clip below the Calendar South launch. I'm convinced this is not one that was ever aired:
- Nick Oliver is not a name I remember as a presenter
- he isn't wearing a tie!
- Calendar East never came from the studio in the "gods" as far as I ever recall (only "West" and pan regional)
- he says "Good afternoon" but looks decidedly dark by the light in the newscentre

That is my case me lord...

Initially the newsroom set facing the newsroom had just a coffee table but am I right in remembering that they later went to a blue curved desk and kept the bench/sofa?
