I do wish they had got rid of those god-awful yellow sections on the desk, and now it looks even worse!

Something odd about the new set up.

Either the presenters sofa is too low or the desk is too high.

The desk is higher than before, similar to what Meridian did to their studio. I think it looks okay providing the camera angle is done nicely, which it normally isn't on Calendar with all the yellow background and sofa edges showing.

With regards to the GMG/Leeds weather hub setup, around 2004ish, was there was another male weather presenter (other than Jon Mitchell or Simon Gilbert) or am I misunderstood?

There was another male presenter either before or after Simon Gilbert, but he was just as shortlived as Simon was, I can't remember his name though!

Harry Gration with Look North tonight, first time in ages since the current weekend 'rota' began where usually the same person does Friday night and all weekend on rotation.

Central sofas, following Tyne Tees with the raised desk and new, thinner plasmas. Strange London Tonight didn't adopt the new plasmas in the VR.

Central sofa on the left, their old ones on the right!

I'm probably alone here, but does anyone else prefer the regional news sets with the 2006-era teal colours and lighting? On Calendar, those colours really felt like a throwback to the '90s teal/green/purple mix they used in various combinations for years and years. The current yellow, when introduced, immediately reminded me of the chevron and all things YTV - but is really starting to grate on me... yellow really is such a terrible colour for news programming.

Oh - and while we're on the subject of regional news, I'm really hoping they put a tad more effort in the titles for the impending January revamp. The current ones are a total embarrassment - like they were knocked up in a lunch break. Perhaps the worst title sequence of any regional news service anywhere. It even beats Calendar's underwhelming 2003-2004 mess.

Sorry to go off on yet another tangent - but does anyone have a particular favourite Calendar/Look North title sequence? My favourite Calendar titles would have to be the extremely shortlived mini-revamp ones from the aforementioned greeny-purple era, IIRC they were in use from around September 1994 up until early 1996. The logo was the same as before (the YTV area map encased within a green polo-mint circle) but this time was placed at an angle. The logo had all sorts of weird, random CGI shapes flying around it before the "CALENDAR" text settled on screen. These titles were pretty OTT graphic-wise, but this particular sequence saw the introduction of the familiar theme they ended up keeping until the 2000 revamp. Surprisingly, there's absolutely nothing on the entire web documenting this look, just the looks before and after it. There is literally only this one brief still from the end of a mid-afternoon news summary: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CVKywFe5_KI&t=1m50s

There must be someone who remembers that look other than me! I think the 6pm programme continued being presented from the raised platform they set-up in the newsroom. Thinking back a few years, I do recall a very short video on The Continuity Booth showing the first ten or so seconds of a Christmas edition during this look (but it didn't include the titles).

They were... The colours were decided on at the last minute too, originally it was just the grey cycs at Gas Street with yellow pars lighting small bits of it (I'm told in the flesh it looked great, on camera it was ropey).

The titles were done by the Central News duty graphics team over a week, using After Effects (no specialist 3D stuff) and some of the elements were recycled (Football full screen graphics spring to mind)

I think I was most shocked at how there was about 3/4 weeks between Central taking the look live and ironing faults out to the next region adopting it, then that region started with the same faults! Shocking.

I get the impression it was done because some regions couldn't be bothered waiting for London to do anything!

Yes I think I've got said clips on my PC somewhere that were downloaded from a pres site in the days when pres sites were popular.

They were still in the newsroom. The first time they moved to a seperate set was I think when the purple look came in around 1996 and Mike Morris joined.
My favourite Calendar titles were probably the 2000 relaunch, least favourite being the ones that came afterwards and that awful red set.

Thought they looked like different sofa designs! That's pretty shoddy in my opinion, they could at least have matching sofas. Confused

Presumably Bruce Gyngell had a big say in employing Mike Morris, he never had a very warm regional news personality and his banter with Christa/Christine was always a bit stilted.
