Now that all bar about 3 BBC regions have taken on a generic "Main Newsroom" type set for their local news programmes, does anybody know if LN Leeds will be following suit any time soon; or does the current curved-style back wall prohibit an easy transition to the 3-sided straight layout?

(The 3 that seem to be lagging behind that I can think of are Look North Leeds, East Midlands Today & Points West. Are there any more?)

Don't forget that the Leeds studio gets more use than any of the others with the SuperLeague Show, so finding a good time to take it out of use could be awkward, and there needs to be a lot of flexibility in whatever set goes in so it can do Look North, Politics Show, Late Kick Off and the SLS.

It would be nice if any new set could be disguised a bit more though - when the Superleague Show follows the Politics Show it does look a bit cheap, and give away that one of the programmes is a pre-rec

There's never a good time to put in a new set to be honest, but generally you do have quite a while to plan it all out. A typical way is the create another studio that looks like a small part of the original, and use very limited shots. You also tend to use the sat trucks more, and use the temp studio as little as you can, which frees up the entire studio floor. All hands on deck, and if the planning has been good, the new sets, from experience, are usually in by the end of the saturday, using sunday to sort the lighting, do the acceptance testing, and check all the shots. All regions have to do it at some time. Just planning and logistics.

True, but the fact that the Leeds studio is used by an indie will probably complicate matters, so finding a time when the Superleague Show isn't on (or could be persuaded that there's a good reason to present from on location) would probably make life easier, and if that coincided with Parliament being in recess and the Politics Show being off air, so much the better.

To answer the question - yes, it will be following suit. Not imminent but it will. Sorting out all the logistics (as mentioned above) is going on now.

Don't forget that Birmingham have a real newsroom in the back of shot and elements of their (original?) set. Even with some swirl frosting on the window, it's still looking far from the prescribed current look. Despite the recent Southampton refurbishment, Oxford are still using their 2007 set and Jersey have their original set too. (regading Birmingham and Jersey, by 'original', I mean the one they launched with in their current buildings)

Back to Leeds, I would have thought that a sensible time to do a set change would be over the summer when Super League and Politics are off-air. It all depends on what facilities are available - Southampton decamped to Studio-B for several weeks during the recent refurbishment, but they had a new studio floor laid as well as putting in the new set. Bristol presented from the newsroom for a few weeks when they had a new floor in 2006. I think Look East came from Cambridge for a weekend when their new set went in. Hull can easily take control of the Look North Leeds region of course ...

Many thanks, Steve - and to all the other posters, for the info.

The Super League is still on in Summer. Might be the odd week when it is off but that will be all. I don't know when Late Kick Off returns but The Politics Show could be done from Hull or on location so any time after September maybe best once the Super League ends
