That's my whole point, Leaving aside the dubious production standards in Hull, Living (partly) in the East Riding I don't get the news for much of the region, its for Hull & Lincolnshire - no mention of events in towns and cities where much of the population work or consider local.

But that's going to be the case for any regional TV news programme if you live near the edge of its transmission area. There will always be places nearby which fall under the remit of another programme, and there will always be people who think they'd be better served from a different regional centre.

And I don't believe for one moment that those who live in the centre of Hull or Lincoln give a toss about news from Bradford or Sheffield... or even from York for that matter.

I think you might be missing Troggles' point, Spencer. The East Riding *is* supposed to be part of the editorial and transmission area of the Hull based Look North, but Troggles feels it doesn't get much coverage.

When the Hull programme launched there were complaints that it didn't cover Lincolnshire enough. Maybe they've gone too far in that direction.

As an experiment I went to http://www.bbc.co.uk/looknorthhull/latest_stories/ and plotted each of these stories on the Belmont coverage map:

*

(there were multiple stories in Hull and Scunthorpe)

On paper at least it seems that there is a reasonable spread around the patch.

This is the equivalent for the Leeds Look North mapped onto the Emley Moor coverage map:

Taking into account his post from the previous page, I assumed he was continuing with his point that he wanted the news from the whole of Yorkshire.

If the news & Sport reflected what people in the East Riding wanted it wouldn't be so bad.

Local to people in East Yorkshire means Yorkshire cricket (never mentioned), plus events in Bridlington, Scarborough, Malton, Pocklington etal. Its no good the BBC deciding what is local and what isn't based on the coverage of a transmitter. The original region got by reasonably well. Following complaints, the Hunmanby relay was switched back to Yorkshire and that covers the coastal Brid strip - who have a choice of Leeds, Newcastle and Hull. I would just like the news to be relevant to the area as (it used to be) rather than the dreadful fudge there is now.

But are viewers in Hunstanton interested in Yorkshire cricket?

See your point. Although I do think that it should mentioned - even if for just 15 secs summary - when playing. Though that is more indicative of the woeful sports coverage they have on Look North Hull. Better than it used to be, but I really do think that their sports editor (Simon Clark) is a waste of space

It is strange that Brid, Scarborough and Whitby are each covered by a different version of Look North (Hull, Leeds, Newcastle), when in many respects you would consider them to be very similar places.

I would imagine that views in Hunstanton have no interest whatsoever in Yorkshire cricket, Lincoln has no interest in Hull City & those in the East Riding can't understand why they are getting wierd stories about people in Haxey fighting over a sheeps bladder - that is the point - its not a region - never will be. It is unfair to cut people off from their own news.

I have to agree with that, and most of your other points. Yes Yorkshire Cricket should be covered, and yes Im sure people in East Yorkshire want stories about Scarborough and Malton, and dont get them because they are (just) in North and not East Yorkshire, and therefore outside the region.

But there has to be a separation point between regions somewhere, and that is very much restricted to where it is by transmitter locations. Not ideal no, but how can it be sorted out cheaply (i.e. not by builder more transmitters)? You can mention stories in places like Scarborough, but then you are, quite justifiably IMO, going to get complaints from people in Kings Lynn who are in the transmitter region, who get very few stories from their area. East Yorkshire, and Yorkshire wide stories such as cricket, could get more coverage, but beyond that it will be hard please people in East Yorkshire's concerns

Does this happen in many other regions, where the boundaries are so artifical compared to say the natural boundary of the TyneTees/North East region

You may be right about East Yorkshire people being interested in Malton or Scarborough stories but the truth is niether East Yorkshire, Malton or Scarborough ever got much of a look in when we had one Look North based in Leeds. Here in East Yorkshire (and in Lincolnshire) we get far more coverage from the Belmont LN that we ever got from an edition that had to serve both West and South Yorkshire County areas.

£24 million (the start up cost of Hull) would have gone a long way to provide more reporters, sat trucks and extra programming from the region. Instead it was spent on a very expensive lease, layers of management and back office equipment and staff. It also caused cutbacks in Leeds. It was accepted by the BBC at the time that this 'region' would not work initially but that the local tv operation would be the fix - that was always the excuse given. Of course this did not happen - due to pressure exerted by local media and their owners.
