Its a new set. On Breakfast this morning, the weather was done live in the studio, which has a large desk and no sofa anymore

It looks like they've gone for a virtual N6/TC7 clone

Not a bad looking set really - though feels like it is a year old already with it being based on same as Nationals. Not complaining though as the old set was looking so dated.

Wonder if a sofa will appear for some of the main programme later?

I wonder if the return of the desk means they'll be going for a "newsier" agenda rather rather than the fluff and Peter's showbiz mates kind of stuff the Hull programme gained a reputation for?

It will be interesting to see how good the virtual stuff is, whether there is any scope for cameras being able to move or if it's limited to pre-set camera angles. But it looks a lot better than when News 24 moved into a virtual set in TC10.

I'm not sure it is virtual as in chromakey, the reflections in the glass on the desk are very good. Is the main background animated, or is it just a static painting / print?

Could this be a hint to a new design of "standard" regional news sets?

It looks chromakey but hard to tell on a web stream of that size. The background is animated.

Looking at it on screen it does look a lot more real - I really like how there is a reflection of the side wall screen in the back wall.

I'd be interested to know exactly how it's done - I'm not convinced the background could be a projection of that size.

I'm not a fan of it, as it looks to the casual viewer to be the same studio as the nationals - and if so, why has the presenter suddenly disappeared to be replaced by someone else? It's hard to explain, but it just looks a little strange to me.

To answer my question, it looks like they can do camera movements, the closing wide shot craned up.

I was impressed tonight, the programme was a lot more watchable, seemed to be much less fluffy.

How many TV studios were there at Woodhouse Lane? Was there a "network" studio or just the regional one? (Not counting the self-op pres studio)

The reason I ask is that I believe they used to do Question Time there from Woodhouse Lane, would that have been from a proper TV studio or would they have used Radio Leeds's Studio 2 (which was big enough to take an audience of over 150) as either a four waller with a scanner?

Given that they have been known to use Universities to stage Question Time before, I wonder if they'll ever go back to Old Broadcasting House?.

I may be wrong, but I don't think Question Time ever did come from Woodhouse Lane. Certainly during the 90s when I worked at BBC Leeds, QT always came from YTV.

There was only the one big TV studio at Woodhouse Lane. Apparently it was large enough for a small audience only, as seen on some local Children In Need opts over the years.

Very often they had different sets in either end of the studio, with the main Look North set at one end, and something like North Of Westminster or the Look North 'soft' set at the other. There were very few network programmes which used the studio - the TV version of Gardeners' Question Time a notable exception.

As for Radio Leeds' Studio 2, during my time there, it was only ever used as a big store-room, and was so full of junk I doubt they'd ever have considered using it for anything at the time. There was also another farcical issue towards the late 90s where parts of the building were left empty, and not to be used, because they had to be 'rented' off BBC Resources (or whichever department was responsible for buildings at the time) - so to save money for BBC Leeds' budgets, they vacated certain rooms such as Studio 2, the Radio Leeds production office and the canteen.

Sometimes it was quite interesting to see what had been dumped in Studio 2 though, especially lots of bits of old Look North sets. This desk from the early 90s was in there for ages...

not entirely correct.
Woodhouse lane had 3 television studios, and at one point had 4 if you count the interim presentation studio.
The largest was Studio A, which is where Look North typically came from, second largest was studio D which was also used for look north on occasion, 3rd largest was studio DD, which is where Presentation was moved to, and the smallest was the old presentation, which turned into the music library.

Thanks for that info and welcome to TV Forum.

What was the thinking behind the studio numbering scheme? Was there a studio B and C at one time, and did Studio D have its own gallery or did it share Studio A's?
