On tonight's Calendar there was a report about YTV's most famous name Richard Whiteley receiving his OBE. Richard then featured later on in an item about the campaign to stop OFCOM reducing the regional commitments.

Meanwhile Faye Barker featured in the panto OB on tonight's show and then was on Package Holiday Undercover at 8pm on ITV1. She never does any proper work that one does she!

Calendar East had Yunus Mulla tonight and talking about him, I saw him walking down the street in Leeds the other day. As you can see I only spot the biggest stars!

Yes - he is prolific in writing forewords for Austin Mitchell books too; I have 'Talkin' Yorksher' and 'Austin Mitchell's Yorkshire Jokes' - both are great reading!

I'm sorry to go off topic, ie this is not Calendar or Look North related, more Radio Leeds, I was listening to it this afternoon in the car no problem (as mentioned on Pg 39 of this thread) and I couldn't help notice that the guy who read the Sports News sounded very familiar, might have been on YTV? Does anyone know who I mean?

No not really not sure who you are meaning.

Tonight's Calendar OB was one of the most adventurous yet, it came from.......... the Calendar Green Room.
Despite there not actually being an OB the show was still presented single handly although shock horror Christine and Duncan actually appeared on screen together in the same room for a short period!

Nice to see Calendar's Faye Barker making her debut presenting on the ITV News Channel this morning. I thought she did a very good job and fitted in well... although it'd be a shame if she left Calendar as she's one of their better presenters IMO.

Faye was on the ITV News Channel? I'll let her off this time then, she's actually doing newsreading for once!

Faye was back on Calendar tonight in panto mode again. Passing through Bradford today I notice she was billed on the big screen as one of the 'big' names switching on the Xmas lights along side the likes of Gareth Gates and players from Bradford Bulls.

Talking about tonight's Calendar I bet all those people waiting for Gareth Gates wondered what was going on with Christine and her pittiful 'Panto Idol' competition, as if anyone in that crowd actually cared!. Christine's no Cat Deeley either is she, the way she was shouting into that microphone.

Due to all this the Calendar News Round-Up and Late bulletin has been getting all kinds of presenters this week. Yunus Mulla yesterday and today Peter McNearney!

Certainly was - she was covering Lucy Alexander's shift, presenting with Andrew Harvey and John Nicolson.

BREAKING NEWS: Just had an e-mail from the Head of Radio Leeds, John Ryan about the date for Internet streaming of Radio Leeds, and Sheffield, Humberside and York on the web.

He's told me that Radio Leeds will 'be up by the end of next week' with Radio Sheffield, Radio Humberside and Radio York following shortly afterwards!

YAY!

There was absolutely no news on Hull Look North tonight, not even a short round-up, so the only place to see today's East Yorks & Lincs news was on Calendar East with Gaynor Barnes.

This was because the Hull Look North came live from the CiN concert, complete with vision problems at the start and sound problems at the end. Calendar manage to do OBs every night without problem. Paul was there as well with Peter and Helen.

Over on the Leeds show, much more quiet with minimal CiN concert. Helen Philpot's Hull report was repeated along with a report from the Bungie Jumping/Bath of Beans correspondent (TM) Tom Ingall. This was with Harry and Cathy with Lisa on the weather

This is totally understandable - the Hull area was specially chosen to host one of the three Children in Need concerts this year. I don't think the BBC would under-expose what is to them a very high-profile important event for the corporation. It is highly unlikely that they'll be in the same situation for many years to come, so while you've got it, flaunt it! The perception of news here is a little narrow. An online dictionary defines the word 'news' as thus:

Quote:
Information about recent events or happenings, especially as reported by newspapers, periodicals, radio, or television.

A presentation of such information, as in a newspaper or on a newscast.

I would think that the report about a race of local mascots down a street in Lincoln CAN be defined as a happening AND a recent event. It is also information (eg telling us the winner), regardless of tone or seriousness. It was presented to us in the medium of a television newscast, and therefore fit to be called 'news'.

What's been overloooked here is that this programme is just ONE singular episode out of approx. 260 weekday shows of Look North per year. I think it's right that once in a while, they should be allowed to deviate and have a day off from the traditional interpretation of 'news' and have a little fun.

Yes - owing to the fact that the region wasn't one of those three that had big concert report potential. Since the split, the concert in Hull was also outside Leeds' NEW coverage area, don't forget. If Leeds HAD been given one of these concerts, you'd have had a damn sight less news than you got on the Leeds Look North tonight. Harry, Christa and Paul would have been there in all their glory.

And what exactly was meant by 'today's news'? Children in Need IS today's news!

I have to agree with you there about technical problems.
I watched until the 10 pm news and it was plagued with vision and sound glitches in readyness for the local capgens. Also during the opts the sound was lower in level with no attempt to correct it which is particulary irritating on music.
It's such a shame on such a high profile event like CiN.
