Well, I'd never realistically expected the two programmes to be called anything but Calendar and Calendar (as opposed to Calendar West and Calendar East).

But, if the "East" version's transmission area includes this sort of area, then there's even more reason to not call it "East", as it's East-&-South really.

As has been often mentioned on this forum before, Lincs/E Yorks/N Norfolk is perhaps not gonna be news-rich enough to support a full 30-mins by itself. Adding the ex-"South" area will help eliminate this problem. And will also save ex-"South" viewers from enduring the Leeds-centric attitute of the "West" version.

BBC Leeds & Hull could learn a thing or two from ITV's new set-up...

Oh, right, so does that mean that the Calendars won't correspond to their BBC counterparts after all?

I assume that the "Sheffield transmitter" is the one that serves the now-defunct "Calendar South" area???? So, that's gonna be grouped with the "East" show, then, is it?

A funny way of dividing things up... Confused

I thought viewers in Sheffield / Doncaster received Peter Levy live.

I work at a retail store in Doncaster when I have to the the sales floor TV's in we can pick up Calendar East West & South!!, Tynes Tees South Edition, Look North Newcastle, Leeds & Hull, it gets very confusing particularly this time of year when I have to change the whole TV display over for the next 6 months

Sounds good - even more local 'news' - like tonight's lead item about a woman who falls asleep if she says 'I love you'.

Just to clarify... Will all of the ex-"Calendar South" area be getting the new "East" programme? Or just the far east of said area? Or what?

Also, do we know for an absolute fact that the East Riding of Yorkshire will get the "East" Calendar service?

I know nothing about the technicalities of transmitters and "sub-transmitters" (relays). But if it is technically possible to do so, might East Yorks get the "Leeds version" of Calendar (yes, I know that both versions' studios are in Leeds, but hopefully you get my meaning)???

This would make it more a case of a North/South split, rather than East/West. Doubtful I know, but just a thought.

With the obvious exception of the South Yorkshire county, that would essentially mean a Yorks/Non-Yorks split, which would probably be a good thing.

If the programme is going to be serving the combined ex-"East" and ex-"South" areas, then Sheffield is a very south-biased backdrop, so presumably they'll do like Anglia West, and have a variable backdrop?

I'd imagine that Sheffield, Lincoln and Hull would be an adequate selection. Maybe even throw in King's Lynne (sp?) or something, for good measure.

I bet the West programme will only ever have Leeds as a backdrop.

I wonder whether all pan-regional bulletins will A have no "window", as currently; B Only ever have Leeds (if Leeds is "West's" only backdrop); or C Use all the varying backdrops used by both sub-regions (if "West" has a plural number of backdrops)???

John Shires did say last night that the backdrop would change.

I've never thought about it that way before, on reflection there is sense in including the north Derbys and S-Yorks area with the Belmont coverage area.

The thing I'm struggling to understand.... I thought the Sheffield Transmitter was a relay for Emley Moor. So how will they broadcast Calendar 'East' off the Sheffield Transmitter, when Emley Moor and its other relays will be transmitting Calendar West? Confused Confer this map
Belmont covers this area for comparison:

As for weather presentation, I imagine Jon Mitchell will do two separate weather forecasts for the two subregions; just as Charlie Neil/ Emma Jesson do for the Central East and West subregions.Belmont coverage

There are parts of the East Riding (ironically parts of Hull, and Howden, where I used to live) where you can't pick up a good signal from Belmont, so those parts will have "Calendar West" as their region by default, even if they should have "Calendar East" as their region in geographical terms.

YTV had a seperate circuit to Sheffield installed when they launched the Calendar South opt out, so strictly speaking it is a main station for YTV. Or they could save a few bob and have an aerial pointing at Belmont installed at Sheffield as an RBL feed.

This may be an urban myth, but apparently said circuit was installed without reference to the IBA, who only found out about it when a viewer phoned up to complain that the NICAM sound was silent but the standard mono was ok. The Authority was apparently a little less than impressed!
