Don't know if other local BBC radios are having their carol concerts today, but Radio Sheffields is being recorded at St Margarets Swinton near Rotherham this afternoon for broadcast on Christmas Day

I didn't think Radio Sheffield touched Rotherham with a barge pole? Or have they rediscovered part of South Yorkshire they never knew existed all of a sudden. Laughing

Well to be fair, it is Radio Sheffield and not Radio South Yorkshire.

Well I was a bit shocked as well but I went along to it and it was quite enjoyable.
They're still going to go beyond Sheffield at next years Carol concert as they said tonight that 2007's is going to be at a church in Barnsley!! Very Happy

Doesn't work like that - their patch is the whole of South Yorkshire, much like Radio Leeds covers the whole of West Yorkshire and Radio York the whole of North Yorkshire*

*Except Skipton, which doesn't seem to get a signal from York but can just about get Leeds.

Why don't they rename the station to South Yorkshire?

BBC Radio Birmingham became BBC Radio WM in the early 80's(after becoming Radio 206 I believe briefly first!).

Yep, that's Jenny Hill.

Radio Leeds became West Yorkshire FM for a while in the early 90's - until somebody the BBC corporate identity police found out

Probably because that would exclude the audience in Derbyshire (especially the Chesterfield area) and Nottinghamshire.

Its 104.1FM signal is broadcast from the Holme Moss transmitter (actually in West Yorkshire, on the border with Derbyshire), enabling the signal to be clearly heard over much of Derbyshire and north Nottinghamshire in the Worksop area.

the Holme Moss situation is interesting with three BBC local stations (Leeds, Sheffield, Manchester) being transmitted from it, using directional aerials.

It's the only example of that being done successfully I'm aware of - Sutton Coldfield originally transmitted BBC Radio Derby but that was for the benefit of the beancounters and was really too far away from the area it was meant to serve.

I used to be able to get Radio Derby when it was on 104.5 off Sutton.

regrettably most of Derbyshire couldn't
