Good point - never thought of that.

I can't help feeling there are a lot of other BBC Local Radio stations which would be more at home in a museum.

Two more people who obviously have not bothered to listen to BBC local radio in the last couple of years. Rolling Eyes

Believe it or not, it has changed over the years. Yes there are still old stations like Radio Lincolnshire / York / Lancashire, but slowly they are changing like Radio Sheffield / Leeds. It's not all pensioners.

Christ you must be joking. Phone Rony on Radio Sheffield is the biggest pile of crap on the radio. Other parts of the station are fairly decent though. News coverage leaves a lot to be desired though.

Georgey Spanswick on the BBC Radio Leeds breakfast show is an acquired taste

Considering I only catch about 2 minutes of the show when the radio cuts off Chris Moyles to let me know the latest about Junction 27 at Gildersome, the banter with her and the travel bloke which she does (after the RDS signal or whatever it is called) is quite annoying

One that might interest Mr Garnett. Whilst on business last week I went from my current home in Edinburgh to Corby. I decided to watch 'Central News East' and to be honest, it was ridiculously poor.

A lack of decent news, an odd bloke doing sport in a disjointed way - I was more interested in watching the obviously 'non' live pictures of Nottingham in the background.

When you watch such pap, you do feel lucky to have Calendar to watch. It's 'newsy' has just the right balance of hard and soft items and a great presenting team. I feel sorry for the downgrading of Look 'Leeds'. It was never very well resourced, but at least when Harry and Judith presented it, it seemed professional. I've never liked Christa 'Doris' Ackroyd and the sad tale of it turning into a social programme must be a real bummer for Harry after he left for the RFL and then the South.

Talking about Christa, she's back on Monday.

She's been away for ages. Harry thanked Penny Bustin for filling in for the past month

Oh dear, I noticed the other day that standards seem to be slipping down by Leeds Market. Look North Leeds seems to be becoming the Harry and Christa Lifestyle Show. Sad, very sad.

Calendar is the only programme in these parts that actually wants to provide a news service to it's viewers. The BBC have given up.

Yes, I must apologise for CNE! It has gone downhill since it left Lenton Lane Studios, which has caused a lot of the decent reporters and presenters to leave. I'm still feel loyal to the programme, for reasons that amount to a "long story".

Ironically the "odd sports-presenter" of which you speak of, is one who left then returned! While it's nice to see Dennis Coath back, he's not as good as he used to be (dare I say past it!). The more frequent sports presenter, David "Chizzes" Chisnall (a new talent who is a breath of fresh air) has been off this week, leaving us with just Dennis-- I'm afraid to say the sports coverage worsened this week as a result.

The news stories of CNE do make me cringe... from what I believe a lack of money/resources means that stories such as major court cases are rarely covered. Most of the important news stories just up in "news in brief" as result. This why CNE is dominated by Take A Break esque human interest news-stories.

The number of "as-live" stories is cringeworthy, as is the number of "still ahead" announcements. The weather chats at the end are becoming longer too... as much as I like Charlie Neil, James Wright and 'the other one' (!), a four-minute conversation just to avoid including another story is taking the piss.

CNE is also increasingly being dominated by long magazine-style features, which take up the space of about three potential stories. The ITV premium-rate text/phone lines for competitions and "tell us your views" syndrome has truly taken hold.

I'm sorry to be so acerbic CNE, but you could do a lot to improve the programme (I do occasionally e-mail CNE to vent my spleen)! CNE are quite as bad as Mr Levy just yet I feel Laughing Hopefully Michael Grades leadership will see a revitalisation of regional news Confused:

BTW Calendar is great, I can pick it up off Belmont from southern Notts. Ducan Wood and Jon Mitchell make a great double act, the other presenters are great too, it seems a shame to split them all up soon! You are right-- the story balance is spot on with Calendar too. It's nice that most the reporters come from the Calendar catchment area, judging by accents, one of the things I like best about the programme

Wrong. I'm as much of a radio anorak as I'm a TV anorak, and I listen to plenty of BBC Local Radio. In fact I spent many years working for BBC Local Radio. So I'd thank you not to make assumptions about me just because my views don't match your own.

Agreed, some of the stations serving mainly urban areas sound slightly better, and I think Leeds is a pretty decent station. Unfortunately stations like that appear to be in a minority.

York is my local station, and so I do give it a go every now and again, but inevitably I find the tone of the presenters ranges from simpering to patronising, and the content mostly dreary, irrelevant and tawdry.

On tonight's Calendar Gaynor Barnes and John Shires were live from the Lincoln Christmas Market (I wonder could we put 2 and 2 together and get 5 based on this on who will present the Calendar East service?)

What was the coverage like on Look North Hull?
