There's a new background on the projector screen this morning featuring a view of the newsroom. I guess it's designed to match the national atrium background.

Looks rather good on the single camera shot. Haven't seen the studio wide-shot yet though. Will be interesting to see how that works, as I can't imagine they've got a VR system like ITN, so the perspective could be a bit cock-eyed, but who knows? We'll find out later.

I would think that it is pretty much a certainty that Gaynor Barnes will get the Calendar East gig

The male presenter role is up for grabs though, I can't see anyone within the current Calendar team who would do it full time

There's also a question of who would do the Lunchtime News, as with it being pan-regional, it can't really be as currently, if half the region arn't going to see them at 6pm.

I don't watch Calendar that often, so forgive me if this a dumb question... Who's the bloke who sometimes stands in for Duncan Wood? He wears glasses and has completely grey hair? Maybe he could do Calendar East?

John Shires

Thanks for that Cool The times I've watched Calendar, they have never announced the presenters names or used astons, as is done will Central Tonight/ News East. Are there any other regions that don't bother doing this?

They do have name captions at the start of short bulletins but not at the start of Calendar, as everyone who presents Calendar is well known

To be honest a name caption on Central News telling people that the bloke is Bob Warman is not really needed, everyone knows who he is!

On this morning's GMTV bulletins, Carolyn was sat in front of a dodgy CSO background. It didn't look right. I'll provide a capture later

One thing I don't get with Calendar is, why don't they use a shot of Leeds on the screen? I can see where they're coming from with the Newsroom shot, but I just think it looks rather odd for a programme like Calendar that covers a large area not to do something like this, where as all of their other major counterparts, ie Granada Reports, Central News etc all use shots of their respective cities.

Just a thought....

There's a lot of complaints, especially from people who live in Sheffield, that Calendar and Look North are too Leeds focused. Also with Calendar now also competing with 2 versions of Look North, a shot of Leeds would be even more unsuitable

By the way, it looks to me like they are actually broadcasting from the newsroom, rather than it being a background. The shots at Lunchtime with Gaynor were still quite tight

Conveniently it's an outside broadcast tonight, as it's a Prime Minister Special.

Well, here's the strange background being used today:

EDIT: If they are indeed in the newsroom, then they could be using the same white curtain affect that the BBC News Westminster Studio sometimes uses:

I thought it may have something to do with the special tonight (with special titles) but alas, no, they're in York

with special opening titles. The first time Calendar have done that during the current corporate look

The UV Sun Index sting went on for ages, the tune seemed to change a bit after 5 seconds, like one of the old 1991 BBC2 idents!

This is what Calendar's GMTV bulletins looked like

There was just this single camera angle throughout

A Prime Minister Special? Could someone tell me what the hell is going on with Calendar at the moment? What's with all the wierd camera shots?

Here's some caps from tonight's Calendar

There were special titles with different images. I only caught the end here

Here's Christine, Duncan and Tony. The entire programme was taken up by an interview with Blair. To be honest it should have been longer, as they didn't have enough time, and therefore made as a seperate programme

The only bit of news was Gaynor back in the 'studio' with a round-up of the headlines. There was no Calendar East or South tonight

Do you think we will ever see more than this tight shot. I can't see them getting 2 presenters in here, maybe they will start to go on the road again?

Could that studio actually be the old bulletins studio - high above the news centre as here: http://tv-ark.org.uk/itvyorkshire/news/calendarlatenews1990.rm

By the way Peter Levy was mentioned on national radio 1 this morning and the fact that he now presents 'Look Hull'. I think Christa was mentioned in all but name as well

Well that set looks to be genuinely in the newsroom to me and not a projection. It will be interesting to see what they do with the 6pm bulletin tomorrow.
