Tonight's Calendar was a bit silly. Firstly during the Gripevine filmed in the newsroom, Carolyn Hodgson strangely walked into shot
Then to finish the programme, following an item about Benny Hill, they finished with a Benny Hill style chase around the Newsroom and outside, with the likes of Jon Mitchell chasing Gaynor around!
Then after this it was time for the weather and instead of Jon being there already, he walked in from the side out of breath!
The next 4 editions of Calendar are at 4pm

It must be the weather, Andrew, sends people silly. What do you mean by Carolyn walking into shot, why was she even there, and was she just in the background? Bless her, she tries way too hard, it seems. I didn't like the Gaynor/John combination this evening, but I guess other than Duncan there aren't many male presenters with much personality.

Sean Batty has been presenting the Look North Breakfast weather bulletins all week. He's not a bad presenter and seems to come across a bit like Daniel Corbett with his phrases such as 'let me rub my crystal ball' and advice to 'keep the deckchairs out' and 'buy some Bermuda shorts'! A bit more enthusiasm in the morning compared to Lisa!

Has Calendar ever presented from outside Kirkstall Road like this before?
Oh yes. The really hot summer of 1989 had Nick Powell, Georgey Spanswick and Bob Rust doing the entire programme from the beer garden at YTV. It's actually in the main building not the newscentre.

A very unusual situation that the BBC do all the time, but is rare on ITV Weather was that it was presented from an OB with the presenter in a box. Here's Jon Mitchell

Harry Gration was no doubt annoyed over on BBC1 at 6.30
Especially with Christa in Dubai!
Alright for some eh... anyone would think Yorkshire were going to win
Indeed, Christa's managed one of her paid holidays again
Having said that Duncan is in Dubai as well, so we will let her off this time. He's reporting on a Bollywood film festival that may be coming to Yorkshire and is apparantly live from there tommorow on Calendar at 4

Harry seemed in quite a good mood when he gave his co-host a kiss after England won on Thursday night...
Enjoyed Christa's interview/flirtation exercise with Jean-Claude van Damme from Dubai yesterday as well, very prominent use of a "BBC LOOK NORTH" microphone, how come she looked a lot better in that report than she does in the studio too?

A post I made in the Central News South closure thread...
Really?
I find that kind of surprising, re: Calendar East.
The changes in the CNsouth/Meridian West areas involve a mixture of...
Downsizing: e.g. dispensing with the Newbury facility altogether; closing down the "production" element at Abingdon; etc.
Redeploying/redifining what already exists: e.g. the Whitley production team for the current "Newbury" programme will be producing the "Abingdon" programme instead. Which doesn't really change their jobs at all (from their point-of-view, where exactly the not-in-Whitely newsgathering centre is, and what settlements/geographic area (etc) are included in the content of those reports, is irrelevent. As long as the reports etc are "beamed" (or whatever) to Whitley, with which to make the programme).
But Calendar East will be a case of turning what is currently only a "part-time" sub-region into a full service - the complete opposite of "downsizing" (so, quite un-ITV plc). Presumably the Kingston-upon-Hull newgathering centre is not a big operation at present, but will have to become so, for the change to a stand-alone programme/service???
And, of course, Bristol will presumably have to "up-size" a bit too, to report from around an enlarged region.
I'm surprised that ITV plc will make so much change within, well, a less than six-month period, it seems.
...turned my mind to the forthcoming stand-alone Calendar East service.
I wonder whether it will mean the end of Calendar's seemingly much-larger-than-any-other-region rendition of the ITV generic regional set? (i.e. they split the existing studio in two - like Central in Birmingham did - and have two much more modestly sized sets back-to-back for the newly seperate west/east programmes). Or will the East programme be house in a different existing studio at the Leeds building?
If they do go for splitting the current studio, then presumably we'll have the joy of them de-camping to the newsroom during the structural works - harking back to the 1990s glory days!
Although ITV has pretty much killed-off all use of regionally-suffixed idents/endcaps etc now, it would be interesting to know what the "official name" - if the need for one ever arises - would be for the stand-alone Hull region. If the Lincs&Norfolk-ignoring name "ITV Yorkshire" already sounds a bit daft for the existing region, it's gonna sound even dafter for a region that is predominantly non-Yorks (i.e. only really includes East Riding of Yorks).
