Looking at pics posted in this forum of the set, it has to be one of the worst of all BBC regions IMO. The 'sofa' is awful. And when on the SLS, with the 'tables' in between each seat means the guests look too far apart.

The older set was bad enough with that NWT style bench and that hideous grey/silver desk, now that they have added those wonkey panels to the gameshow looking illuminated squares the studio looks terrible. And the new desk is vile too.

*Rant over* Very Happy

Plus, I caught a few minutes of the Hull edition, do they always use that one shot with Peter Levy in front of those awful multicoulered panels at different angles? After the 'Still to come' sequence the wide showed a large sofa and two screens.

The Hull set was arranged differently when the programme first started. There was a large screen behind the presenters and two sets of light panels the other screen was set at more or less a right angle and was used for the weather and the Look North news headlines in the days where standing up was in fashion. The earstwhile editor had the set shuffled to its present layout due to viewers complaints about the CGI humber Bridge which used to sit in the background. The wide shot is generally pre-recorded.
Can't see it getting a revamp till they get an editor Exclamation

IMO the CGI Humber Bridge was better than the light panels they have as a background now.Surely it would have made snse to change the image rather than move the couch so that the lights were the background?

They didn't move the seat they moved the whole set & fiddled around with it. I think you hit the nail on the head when you said what would make sense. Nothing much makes sense at the BBC at the moment Rolling Eyes

Didn't they also reconfigure the desk so that only one monitor remained? Yes now on the old background screen isn't it just a white version of the LN logo (when its turned on). What a waste. Rolling Eyes

Agree wholeheartedly about the current Look North set - when I first saw it, I thought I'd fell back a decade or so. I preferred the set used when they moooved to teh new building - it looked [to me] much crisper & modern.

What was wrong with the 2 large screens that they have had to replace one with what looks like red roller blinds? The way they hang scew-wiff when shown on wide shots (and some close ups when they are the left or right edge), irritate me, as does the desk.

My personal favourite set was the one used in Oct 97 - Apr 2000.

Wonder if there will be a change to the corporate image, following the new National News Sets. Any info?

Seems as though they love watching themselves too! Laughing

Does anyone else find Jon Mitchell's 'non weather presenting' parts of Calender a bit, for want of a better word 'disturbing'?...I wouldn't deny he's a great weather presenter, but I felt that the presentation of flowers to Nicola felt so staged and false...maybe it's just me????

What generally seems to happen is that the National sets change - then the regional ones change theirs vaguely to match, one by one. Once they're done, National changes again. Wink

I think the main reason for the rearrangement in Hull was so that Peter didn't look so lonely (for want of a better description) when it changed to a single headed format - they took away half of the sofa as I remember it

Thanks for that info Spencer.......will have to wait & see what the changes are [to the Nationals]. I suppose that as LN have made changes so recently (and so retograde IMO), then it'll be a while before we'll see another change.

Dunno - I have a feeling the new N6 set may have some similarities to the Hull and Leeds sets - this thing about the background changing colour in particular.

Now there's an interesting thought, Look Hull being a trend setter for the national standards of presentation Razz

Wasn't the Hull building meant to contain lots of new technology that they were trying out before rolling out elsewhere? Hence all the cockups early on...
