The one thing which really puzzles me is why at Breakfast the background behind Claire is CSO'd onto the blue projector screen behind her...

...whilst at other times, the exact same image is projected onto the screen and used as a background...

During the afternoon bulletin yesterday, Ian White had the projected background behind him filling the entire shot - creating a similar effect to breakfast, but it looked so much better and more natural - and of course no jagged CSO 'halo' around him.

Does anyone know why they use two different methods to create similar results?

(PS. Hope you don't mind me 'nicking' your images Steve to make my point!)

EDIT: The background looked a lot less pink this afternoon - much more of a blue tint to it.

There was a bit of a cockup on the 7.26am bulletin this morning, no doubt getting used to the new equipment. The travel and weather service disappeared about 30 seconds in, leaving Clare full screen. Then somebody messed the timings up and they opted back in ages too late. Moria had already started her news headlines.

Clare looks a bit at a loss now she doesn't opt her self in and out, at the end she just had to sit there and wait for someone to press the button.

Oh a thought on the new studio, thank goodness there's no pointless standing up, in fact there's less standing up now than there was in the old studio, and secondly, good to see no stupid laptops on the desk as well

At a guess... won't the afternoon bulletin be via the "main" gallery and Breakfast from the smaller one... perhaps the small gallery lacks the ability to do anything clever with the screen other than make it go blue?

Here's a techy question, now that Leeds have gone full widescreen, why is it that just before an opt there a few frames when the network widescreen picture goes into "faux widescreen" (as used to happen with the entire programme, when the 4:3 picture was zoomed to filled a 16:9 screen, with narrow bars down the sides) before cutting to the full widescreen BBC1 Yorkshire symbol (for example)?

That's a good point... the Hull studio has computers built in to the desk, and Woodhouse Lane used to have a keyboard on the desk for the 10.25 but never for 18.30

That was a classic on tonight's Look North Poor Relation (that's Hull of course! only joking Wink )

Paul was wearing a blue shirt, and his new CSO curtain must be blue, so you can guess what happened!. Best bit was at the end when the outlook screen had some flowers on the left hand side so his shirt became flowery, he then opened his suit jacket to show off the flowers in more detail. As you can imagine Peter was howling at this. One for Outtake TV.

Meanwhile, all this talk of screens, CSO, rear projection etc, what type of screen is it on Calendar, it always looks very good what ever it is, I'm sure it'd look good if Jon Mitchell did the weather from it, if they did that type of thing on ITV.

Oh and Greg Dyke was a guest on Calendar and a recorded guest on Look North.

This is because the analogue network is still routed (converted to 16:9 - as 14:9 pillarbox) via the main digital vision mixer - because the analogue network is "ahead" of the digital one.

The digital opt happens at a fixed point after the analogue opt (the opt-out trigger for digital is generated by "red lights" going out on the analogue network source on the vision desk usually) - and the studio vision mixer output is also delayed by a similar amount so that the timing works on both networks. However they may not have got the timing delay quite right. This means that the digital opt is happening a frame or two early - so cutting to the vision mixer before the analogue network feed has been cut-away from. Therefore you are seeing a few frames of the analogue network "leaking" onto the digital network.

I think it has improved since Monday.

Does Look North (Hull) exisist at all bulletin times yet, or are they still just 18:30 and 22:25?

If they're not full-time already, when will they be?
