I wonder how they'll split it with regards to transmitters, as looking at the TX map on this page Bradford's served by the main 92.4FM signal from Holme Moss... and I can't see them switching that over to Radio Bradford (or whatever they're calling it).

I'm not surprised they're trying to address the problem, as Radio Leeds has always struggled in Bradford and the rest of West Yorkshire, undoubtedly partly due to its name.

In the early 90s they were planning on re-naming themselves BBC West Yorkshire FM, and even went as far as having car-stickers made, and ISTR jingles too which were never used. In the end, following a change of management, the idea was dropped, as they decided the Radio Leeds brand was too valuable.

(Incidentally that's a precis of one chapter of my university dissertation from too many years ago).

all these rumours of even local-er local radio are interesting. as i'm sure you’re aware bbc cwr has recently re-split from bbc wm, but there are (or were) rumours that bbc midlands were contemplating providing an opt within bbc wm for the black country. technically how it'd be possible i do not know - as the black country is served by the main 95.6 frequency. its interesting to think how much change there has been at wm - the name change, the creation and expansion of asian network with the help of radio leicester, merge and de-merge of cwr.

however i get the feeling the plans for the black country wm sub-opt, and presumably radio bradford come from the dyke-era, prior to the recent budget cuts?

I do believe the idea is one that's been in the pipeline since the Dyke era yes.
Looking at the frequencies, I don't know how they'd manage to do it, unless they just run it on 774 and have a split breakfast show. Of course the Asian programming, which broadcasts out of the Bradford studios anyway doesn't it?, uses 774 after 4pm anyway

Looking at those maps, maybe 102.7 and 95.3 would cover most of the Bradford and Calderdale/Kirklees area that they would be aiming for. Those maps probably underestimate the signal a bit, as I'm always saying you can get Radio Sheffield in Bradford!

I seem to have took a wrong turn somewhere Laughing

Seriously, what other FM transmitter sites are available in the Black Country, because I can only think of Turners Hill(Beacon Radio's 'home')?

The planned station for Bradford was a stand alone station rather than an opt-out. It is in this years aims and objectives - so the idea has not been dropped as far as I am aware. The HRLP for Yorkshire was very keen to see it through.

That could be so... especially considering the way Radio York has split its frequencies. The 'Harrogate and the Dales' service on 104.3 has *very* patchy reception in Harrogate itself, whilst the main 103.7 service is clear as a bell. So it seems that actually being able to be heard in the target area isn't a priority.

Anyone noticed that Radio Leeds have slightly reworked their news jingles?

Top of the hour one's been jazzed up a bit hasn't it... haven't heard any others. Just as I was saying they still sound fresh, they sound even fresher.

The sport sting has been changed as well I think.

Do you know they've started playing music on West Yorkshire Sport

Also, the pan-regional night network show Frank Wappat on Mondays from 7-10pm no longer airs on BBC Radio Leeds. Instead its "Live Lounge with Sally Fairfax". Does Jo Whiley know about this!

In fact do you know besides the late show the only time BBC Radio Leeds takes the night network programmes is, Saturdays 7-10pm for Hot Country with Bob Preedy, but only on AM mind, on FM its The New Black with DJ Fluid, and Thursdays 7-10pm for Raw Talent, all the rest of the schedule 24 hours a day is unique to BBC Radio Leeds

It started not long after they started Look North from a cupboard at Radio Humbersides' old building.

I forgot to mention he also made an appearance on BBC Breakfast yesterday in a mini featurette called 'Bird's Eye View'. They must have been up all night thinking of that name.
