Peter has announced that they about to undertake the BBC's biggest public consultation exercise ever next week by asking viewers to come up with the new name for 'Look North'. Rolling Eyes

nice piece on Radio Leeds with Liz Green this lunchtime, linked up with Radio Northampton to take the piss as Leeds had come top in a survey of sexiest city in the UK and Northampton came bottom

Great to see Harry Gration doing the late Look North in Leeds for a change.

I really don't see that, no other BBC region has such a specific geographic title.

If they really are serious about consulting the region (this means both banks of the Humber) there is no way "Hull Live" would ever be accepted. Surely even the BBC are not that out of touch with their audience to realise they would be alienating the whole South of the region. The only way it will work is to have a non geographical name, a la Spotlight or Calendar. Anything else just doesn't work when you have two counties so staunchly defensive of their regional identities such as Yorks and Lincs.

I really don't see what they think this will resolve, the name of the programme really isn't the issue here.

The name 'W ankabout' was suggested to me during the week (by a LN reporter!).

Wouldn't "Hull Half-dead and really rather dull" be more accurate - which the BBC is always telling us is what it tries to be?

Levy Live? That'd guarantee he could never take a day off! Although still a bit wide of the accuracy mark.

Never mind the name of the programme, what about the name of the region ?

It was initially "BBC East Yorkshire & Lincolnshire", then they swapped it around to "BBC Lincolnshire & East Yorkshire" (gramatically better), now it's "BBC Yorkshire & Lincolnshire"!

The current name is poor because (A) It's the old Leeds name, (B) It implies that they cover most/all of Yorkshire, which they don't.

Will the Public Consultation also address this?

Regarding the title: There is certainly no Compass Direction phrase that accurately distinguishes the region. So, a "Spotlight"-style ambiguous title must surely be the only option?

My suggestion is "Humber Tonight with Peter Levy"

The conspiracy theorist in me wonders if when the new Hull building opened they only had 16:9 idents with "Yorks and Lincs" on then, no "Lincs and E. Yorks" variant, and it's stuck since then?
