UPDATE:

Just heard it on the grapevine that (don't know if Square Eyes, Andrew, Huddy and Alf Garnett are going to believe this), Look North Hull has been nominated in the 'Nations and Regions News Programme of the Year' category at this year's Ruby Awards ceremony to be held in York on 16th May!

My response was simply 'blimey!'

Someone in Look North Hull told me they'd heard that going round, I didn't beleive it and can't find a source for it. The only award the Peter Levy show deserves is the "Biggest Drop in Standard" award...
Also, if the 'other' Look North had people at the new airport, couldn't we have had a joint broadcast, then go back to the respective studios, it would make sense with a big story that affects both bits of the show. And there couldn't be an argument that the presenters wouldn't be familiar, because apart from Peter and to some extent Helen, none of them are recognised by joe public anyway!

it is a pretty meaningless internal award ceremony, unrecognised outside the BBC. A bit like 'employee of the month' at KFC.

Yes, but that doesn't change the fact that LN Hull should be at the BOTTOM of any awards list, even an internal one... If it had won any other year, fine, but now, as the Peter Levy Show... No Way!

Katherine said it had been nominated. No doubt along with 15 or so other programmes

Exactly.

Cheapskate television for morons, or what?

"We can't afford to send a reporter out today, so let's read you what's in the local papers and use their journo's stuff, second hand!"

At least HTV West pinch their stories out of the Bristol Evening Post, but don't actually TELL you that's what they're doing.

Look North has loads of reporters - but they are never used - my mate says there is fear they might upstage the main attraction - Peter Levy

Blimey that is desperate. No wonder this programme is going to the dogs - management sounds like a right shambles as well.

Levy, it has to be said, is average at the very best.

Good at telling other luvvies how wonderful they are, when they appear down the line from another studio because they can't be bothered to go to Hull; but damn useless at anything like a hard interview that might involve questioning the opinion of the interviewee.

I can't agree with this business about Finningley airport. Look North Hull presents itself as covering the Humberside region. Humberside already has an international airport at Kirmington.

The main impact of Finningley airport is the effect it will have on services and employment at Humberside airport.

The opening of Doncaster Robin Hood airport was - as you say - national news. It had been covered on Radio 4 that morning. It had been covered by Calendar (which would take a different point of view - the Yorkshire point of view).

On the other hand, the unexploded bomb story was amusing, although it probably didn't do the people of Boston much credit. I loved the bit where he started hitting the bomb with a hammer to get the bits of rust off. Just the sort of thing to sit down to with your tea.

Just as a matter of interest, do other BBC regions give politicians a hard time during interviews? I've always assumed that politicians and businessmen put up with a roasting from Paxman, Humphries et al because of the national exposure these broadcasters give them (plus the fact that their ego's delude them into thinking they'll give Paxman/Humphries a bloody nose) whereas local stations aren't worth bothering with unless they get an easy ride.

However, just to toe the party line I agree Look North's gone of the boil since Helen F left. I cant understand why, if they could pay someone to cover her maternity leave, they can't pay Helen Philpot to do the job full time.

Perhaps as a 'hard newsperson' yes, but on the radio as a presenter on BBC Radio Leeds he was well-respected. Having listened to him many times when visiting my brother-in-law in Leeds I really enjoyed his show. There was more banter with Paul to enjoy and in the radio medium, he is excellent. Perhaps he's too nice to do the hard stuff....

Indeed.

I'd hate to see him faced with a situation like the civilian walk-outs at Devon & Cornwall Constabulary in the last week.

I just can't see him turning the thumbscrews on a Deputy Chief Constable like the Spotlight team have been doing.

Okay, soft might be good for PART of a local news programme, but NOT the whole damn half hour.
